The adaptation of Stephen King’s scary clown thriller racked in an astonishing $117 million, the second largest opening weekend for an R-rated flick of all time. Clearly the film benefited from its well known source material and great reviews, but perhaps pent up demand and lack of real competition played a part. Reese Witherspoon-vehicle Home Again brought in $9 million. Not bad given the current state of rom-coms, but the disparity did represent one of the largest gaps between a first and second place film on record. Naturally, an It sequel is already in the works despite the fact King never penned a sequel to his novel. Hollywood loves a good franchise, even if one of the lessons of the slow summer box office is audiences are getting a little tired of franchises. | The Celeb and After Party Filled NYFW(eekend) | Getting Too Caught Up In It | During the weekend of New York Fashion Week, the lines between fashion show and after party start to get blurred as some of the designers with a flair for populist glamour take center stage. It started on Friday with Jeremy Scott’s 20th anniversery show, a shiny, rainbow-hued rave of a collection that brought out Beyoncé mentees Chloe and Halle and Lionel Richie (he got to see daugther Sofia Richie walk for the first time). Later, Calvin Klein held a Berlin-style rave with an all-female DJ lineup that brought out (hereditary) royalty in the form of Paris Jackson, Brooklyn Beckham and Lourdes Leon. Saturday night saw a face-off between Alexander Wang and Philipp Plein in overlapping time slots (though, neither started on time). Wang headed to Brooklyn with models like Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber and Bella Hadid. His after party featured performances by Cardi B, Ja Rule and Ashanti. Plein had Irina Shayk (making her first post-pregnancy walk) and a lot of rappers on his runway, and featured Dita Von Teese, Future and Nicki Minaj as entertainment. Though, it was Teyana Taylor’s killer dance moves that really stole the show (nevermind that Tiffany Trump was front row). The celeb-heavy theme continued into Sunday with both Victoria Beckham and Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma opting to show in New York (Rihanna’s runway featured BMX stunts, natch). Of course, NYFW isn’t all about the celebs and the after parties, but this weekend it was hard to think otherwise. | | | | The First Batch of Emmy Winners | The Emmys main show are still a week away, but the Creative Arts Emmys, the ceremonies where they hand out all the statuettes that don’t make it on air, were held this weekend. So who cleaned up? Well, Westworld, Stranger Things and Saturday Night Live each took home five awards. SNL’s total included comedy guest acting Emmys for both Melissa McCarthy and Dave Chappelle. Gilmore Girl vet Alexis Bledel won for her guest performance on The Handmaiden’s Tale. RuPaul’s Drag Race took home three-including another for Ru himself as best reality host (though, he was in New York for DragCon and a jointly-hosted party with Marc Jacobs). Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th also took home four awards, and led the director to make an inspirational speech calling on those who are “aggressively demoralized and devalued” to “stand up and be heard.” | | | | | | | | | | | We enlisted photographer Cait Cronenberg to hold court at our VIP photo booth at the Toronto International Film Festival. In addition to George Clooney, she caught Elle Fanning, Priyanka Chopra, and Jake Gyllenhaal. See the rest here. | | | | | | | | Michael J.
