The Bronx-raised rapper’s summer jam “Bodak Yellow” hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday, culminating a long, thoroughly modern path to the top that started years ago with social media notoriety, some reality television stints, and now her musical endeavors. The song, an infectious display of raw personality and a celebration of hard work, replaced Taylor Swift’s decidedly calculated “Look What You Made Me Do,” a celebration of pop-star artifice. Cardi is the first female rapper to have a No. 1 song without a featured act since Lauryn Hill climbed the chart way back in 1998. The song’s success was helped along by a viral Internet campaign with the aim of propelling it to the top. The takeaway from Cardi’s success after a year of so much lukewarm response to the efforts of expertly focus-grouped pop stars: Maybe people just want something a little more real. Of course, be sure to look back at our interview with Cardi from the summer, in which she shared her tips for social media glory. | | | | | | | The start of fall television really kicks into high gear this week, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mick, and, of course, This Is Us returning tonight. The most intriguing newcomer (well, sort of) in the lineup tonight: Law & Order’s latest spinoff, True Crime: The Menendez Murders, which goes both totally true life (as opposed to just inspired by the headlines) in inspiration and anthology in format. Taking its cues from the infamous ’90s murder case, the show stars Edie Falco as defense attorney Leslie Abramson, with the help of a curly wig. Falco is, of course, great. “She only makes a few appearances in the first two episodes, but they are enough to make us look forward to the remaining six episodes, when, no doubt, there will be a lot of Falco and it will be worth watching,” writes the San Francisco Chronicle. Otherwise, though, it seems like American Crime Story this is not. But it airs on NBC at 10 p.m., right after This Is Us, so we expect plenty of people will give it a try. | | | | Long-Awaited Tabloid Moments | | | | Tabloid editors likely spent the weekend with two questions gripping their souls: 1) Is Kylie Jenner really pregnant? 2) Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make their first official public appearance together in Toronto during the Invictus Games? The answers: Yes and yes. While Jenner’s mother, Kris, remained tight-lipped about the pregnancy, only to say that it hadn’t been confirmed, a rep for Caitlyn did confirm that she had known about her daughter's pregnancy for a while now, thus implying that it is indeed very, very real. So, yes, America’s royal family will soon add one more. The same seems to be true for the British royal family, at least through possible marriage. Harry and Meghan sat next to each other while watching a game of wheelchair basketball at the Invictus Games, which marks the first time the couple have been willfully publicly photographed together side-by-side. Harry also reportedly stopped by the set of Markle’s television series, Suits, to meet her coworkers. | | | | | | | | | | | Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s daughter, may be getting all the headlines, but her brother, Presley, has been a Fashion Week regular for a few seasons. | | | | | | | | Neels Visser, 19 (One of Those Vine Boys Dolce & Gabbana Love So Much) Serena Williams, 36 (Champion, Mother) Jill Soloway, 52 (Amazon’s In-House Auteur) Linda Hamilton, 61 (Soon to Be an Action Star Again) Olivia Newton-John, 69 (America’s Australian Sweetheart) | | | | | | |
