Mother!'s Day

Only a handful of films have gotten a straight-up “F” from CinemaScore, the company that polls opening-night audiences. Most of them are either horror movies (interestingly, often about people stuck in a house) or A-list actors working with auteur directors at their artsiest and most uncompromising. Mother! had all those things going for it, so maybe it’s not a huge surprise it got an F (and keep in mind several films’ ultimate reputations have survived low CinemaScores). Still, it wasn’t a good weekend for the Jennifer Lawrence film, which only racked up $7.5 million at the box office. That’s lower even than American Assassin, which took in about $14.8 million and a second-place finish. It dominated again with a pretty astounding $60 million for its second weekend. It is now, far and away, the highest-grossing September release in history, with a total take of $220 million in just 10 days.

Diversity at the Emmys

Sean Spicer, in Any Form

For the third year in a row, the 2017 class of Emmy nominees was the most diverse in history and the Television Academy followed through with some historic wins. Lena Waithe, who had already made history as the first African-American woman nominated for best comedy writing, won alongside Aziz Ansari for the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None. Donald Glover became the first African-American to win for best comedy director. Riz Ahmed became the first man of Asian descent to win any acting category. The Handmaid’s Tale’s Reed Morano became the first woman to win drama directing in 22 years. Outside of historic firsts, Big Little Lies dominated the limited series/TV movie categories, Veep continued its best comedy streak, while The Handmaid's Tale took home the top drama prize. It was almost enough to make you forget that regrettable Sean Spicer cameo. Of course, you can find the best dressed of the night here and the biggest snubs and surprises here

Easy Choices

James Woods, the once, um, working actor, is one of just several souls out there who has tried to amp up his notoriety by becoming an amateur pro-Trump pundit on Twitter. When the cultural conservative criticized the seven-year age gap between the main characters in the upcoming gay coming-of-age film Call Me by Your Name, actress Amber Tamblyn blasted back by reminding Woods (and the world) that he tried to pick her up at a dinner when she was just 16. Woods denied the claim, but Tamblyn responded with a powerful essay in The New York Times, titled “I’m Done With Not Being Believed,” in which she recounted all the times as a woman in Hollywood her concerns and safety have been minimized when her word was put against a man’s. “For women in America who come forward with stories of harassment, abuse and sexual assault, there are not two sides to every story, however noble that principle might seem,” she wrote. “Women do not get to have a side. They have an interrogation.”
