That was a modest increase over the first Kingsman film from 2015, and kept the box office on track with a solid September after a dismal August. You can’t say the same of The LEGO Ninjago Movie. After the surprise critical and commercial success of The LEGO Movie and, to a degree, The LEGO Batman Movie, Ninjago was both a quality and commercial letdown for the nascent franchise. Its $21 million take was under expectations. Maybe movies based on the classic toy blocks aren’t all necessarily the next Pixar-level animated must-sees they could have been. Meanwhile, Battle of the Sexes and Victoria and Abdul, which could nab award season nods for respective leading ladies Emma Stone and Judi Dench, each premiered small, but had gangbusters per-screen averages. Victoria did an average of $38,000 in its four screens, while Battle took in an average of $25,000 for each of its 21 theaters. | | | | | | | Why does President Trump insist on unleashing so much divisive and pointless garbage drama on the weekends? On Friday evening Trump was in Alabama talking up his preferred candidate in the Republican Senate primary when he decided he needed some cheap applause, so he said he hoped for the ouster of any football player who knelt during the national anthem, as former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has done in the past, and called players who do such a thing by a crass name. It was yet another instance of the Trump White House being infuriated by minorities expressing their opinions. He then seemed to rescind the NBA champion Golden State Warriors’ invitation to the White House. The reaction from the sports world was swift and strong. LeBron James called Trump a bum. Kaepernick’s mother, a polite Christian woman from Wisconsin who instilled her faith in her son, took to Twitter to proclaim herself a “proud bitch.” Many NFL teams made a pointed show of locking arms during the national anthem, even among players who stood and knelt. Many NFL owners are also firing back. “I know our players who kneeled for the anthem and these are smart young men of character who want to make our world a better place for everyone,” said Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a fellow Manhattan real estate developer far more successful and more than twice as rich as Trump, in a statement. “They wanted to start a conversation and are making a difference in our community, including working with law enforcement to bring people together. We all can benefit from learning, listening and respecting each other.” | | | | Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Public Debut...Sort Of | While her husband was ruining sports for everyone in America, Melania Trump was up in Canada to peacefully and glamorously enjoy some games. Go figure. She was on hand for Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, an Olympic-style series of games that feature athletes who are wounded armed service members or veterans. Mrs. Trump sat with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Harry himself. The real headline here was that Meghan Markle also attended, marking her first official public appearance together with the royal...kind of. British Royal decree declares that since they aren’t engaged yet they can’t actually sit together in public, but she did sit a few rows ahead of Harry. The prince was also said to have visited the set of Markle’s TV series, Suits. One set that neither the prince nor Markle will be visiting is that of an upcoming Fox pilot created by Markle’s ex-husband. It’s about a guy whose ex-wife marries a British prince. | | | | | | | | | | | By now, you’ve probably seen the ‘90s supermodel reunion that closed out Donatella Versace’s show, a heartfelt tribute to her late brother Gianni, but maybe you didn’t see all the social media celebration afterwards.
