The failure of The Mummy, earlier this year, had Hollywood chattering about the limits of Cruise’s stardom, but thankfully he had American Made in his back pocket. The film opens this weekend, and critics seem to love it simply because, well, it’s Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise in a classic Tom Cruise movie. (This time he’s a 1980s pilot who works as a drug dealer…except that he’s a good drug dealer because he’s being paid to be one by the CIA.) For those who want something a little less Cruise, Emma Stone’s Battle of the Sexes opens in wide release. The real curiosity at the box office this weekend is Flatliners, which finds Ellen Page as one of a number of medical students who find a way to temporarily stop their hearts in order to visit the other side. Hmmm, we wonder why the critical embargo hasn’t been lifted yet. To a certain crowd, however, the only movie that really matters this weekend is on Netflix: Jane Fonda and Robert Redford’s reunion in Our Souls at Night. | | | | Princess Diana at Paris Fashion Week | | | | Princess Diana’s style, 20 years after her death, still proves influential. In the case of Kanye West collaborator Virgil Abloh’s latest show for Off-White, the inspiration was quite literal. The designer re-created some of the People’s Princess’s most famous looks. This included homages to everything from her infamous “revenge dress” to the bike shorts she wasn’t shy about being photographed in while out in public. For a side-by-side comparison of the collection and Diana’s wardrobe, click here. Nostalgia was evident elsewhere in Paris, too. Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing closed his show with a pack of some of the aughts’s most iconic models, including Natalia Vodianova, Natasha Poly, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Karolina Kurkova. (Naomi Campbell closed Abloh's show.) Goth bad boy Rick Owens seemed to be feeling nostalgic for Kevin Costner’s Waterworld, since he made international fashion A-listers wear black rain ponchos for a show that featured an unruly fountain in the middle of the runway. You could make the case for either when it comes to Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, but there’s no denying he had a profound impact on American culture. Sure, there’s the nudie empire he created, but, honestly, the articles really were worth reading. The legendary bon vivant passed away Thursday at the age of 91 and left many centerfolds in his wake. Models of all types, from Cindy Crawford to the one and only Pamela Anderson paid their respects on social media. We also compiled a semi-safe-for-work selection of some of Playboy’s most stylish covers. | | | | | | | | | | | Well, will you look at that? It’s 2017’s two biggest breakout stars: Baby Driver himself Ansel Elgort and noted money mover Cardi B. | | | | | | | | Halsey, 23 (Nipple Freer) Chrissy Metz, 38 (She Is Us) Nicolas Winding Refn, 47 (Polarizing Auteur) Ian McShane, 75 (England’s Roughest) | | | | | | |
