Love

We have not yet even come to the first anniversary of the collective American heartbreak that was the announcement of the separation of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and yet Hollywood keeps delivering us more anti-romantic news. This time in the form of the legal seperation of Chris Pratt and Anna Faris, the sweet couple who were #relationshipgoals for the kind of people who would use the hashtag #relationshipgoals. In a joint statement, the pair announced they were separating after eight years of marriage and trying “hard for a long time.” If that wasn’t enough, word also came that Silicon Valley maverick Elon Musk and Amber Heard were calling it quits after a year together. In more niche news, art world fixture Dasha Zhukova is also divorcing her Russian billionaire husband Roman Abramovich. This in addition to all the other celebrity breakups 2017 has already given us. Though, one has to wonder if there’s something about the late summer and early fall that seems so prime for breakups. We suppose it leaves enough time to rebound by next Valentine’s Day...that is if all this news hasn’t convinced you that love is dead anyway. If not, well, then take a look at all these over-the-top socialite weddings that have happened this summer.

Film Icons on TV

In a time when so many of film’s biggest female stars are jumping to television to great acclaim (to the point that Reese Witherspoon says more Big Little Lies could be on the way), one of the few who has resisted the trend has pulled the ultimate flex for signing on to a high profile biopic on television’s first female superstar. Yes, after years in development, a Lucille Ball biopic written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Cate Blanchett is finally picking up steam and set to start shooting sometime soon. Titled Lucy and Desi, casting is already underway for the part of Desi Arnaz (in addition to casting for Vivian Vance and William Frawley-AKA Fred and Ethel). Amazon, which is increasingly flexing its own motion pictures muscle, is behind the flick. We have some questions about the project- can Sorkin make up for Studio 60? Can Blanchett do physical comedy? But we’re highly anticipating this. Who knows? Maybe it can kick off a trend of other television leading lady biopics. Alison Brie as Mary Tyler Moore, perhaps?

IKEA Rugs

Readymades

The secret that all club kids, drag queens and street style stars on a budget know is that often the most memorable looks come from taking something cheap and turning it into something that looks like a million bucks. Apparently, Game of Thrones' costume designer knows it too, because as former costume designer Michele Clapton recently revealed, some of the show’s battle-ready coats are actually made from IKEA rugs. Yes, the same rug you bought for your first apartment is also part of Jon Snow’s wardrobe. “The [Night’s Watchmens’] capes are actually Ikea rugs,” Clapton revealed during a lecture at L.A.’s Getty Museum. “We take anything we can. We cut, and then we shaved them, and then we added strong leather straps, and break down, which is like a religion on Game of Thrones.” DIY fashion: If it’s good enough for television’s most expensive show, maybe it’s good enough for you.
