Flood Zone Stilettos

As President Donald Trump and wife Melania boarded Air Force One on Tuesday to tour the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, some took issue with the first lady’s choice in footwear. Stepping out in a bomber jacket over black cigarette pants, Mrs. Trump also had on some sky high snakeskin stilettos, shoes not particularly practical for touring a flood zone. Though, by the time Air Force One landed, Mrs. Trump had changed into Adidas Stan Smiths (and, notably, a baseball hat that read “FLOTUS”). Though, perhaps it was President Trump’s wardrobe choices that deserved more scrutiny. Trump, who is, if anything, a savvy marketer, has chosen this week to debut a new favored baseball cap. Available in multiple colors, it reads “USA” on the front panel, while “45” (as in the 45th President) is embroidered on the side. Incidentally, the hats are now for sale on Trump’s re-election website for $40. All proceeds go to a Trump-aligned PAC. The FLOTUS hat, it should be noted, is not for sale on the site. Yet, anyway.

Secrets

As the Toronto International and Venice Film Festivals approach (both known for premering films that truly kick off Oscar season), director Darren Aronofsky doesn’t want you to know too much about mother!, his offering at Toronto. Others, however, are more than willing to give some more clues about what to expect. In a chat with Deadline, Alexander Payne dishes on his Downsizing (a film in which Matt Damon is literally shrunk), saying, “It’s the first time I’ve done a visual effects movie, so it was a lovely education on how to make one.” He also explains why Reese Witherspoon ultimately didn’t co-star (she was busy making Big Little Lies). Meanwhile, George Clooney is presenting his latest directorial effort Suburbicon, about paranoia that takes hold in a suburb after a minority family moves in. "It's a pretty angry film. There's a lot of anger out there. I think that's reflected in the film,” he told the Associated Press. "The main idea of the film was to pick some fights and I always like picking fights."

Will and Jada’s Musical Pasts

Willow and Jaden, For a Moment

Sure, the world may be paying more attention to the musical styling ms of Willow and Jaden Smith for a moment, but their parents, Will and Jada, would also like to remind you that they too have musical talents. In fact, Will Smith has premiered his first collaboration with old partner DJ Jazzy Jeff in 19 years at a festival in England. It’s a little EDM bop called “Get Lit.” There’s no studio version out yet, but you can watch the live version here. Meanwhile, Jada (who, if you remember, currently has her own heavy metal band Wicked Wisdom) once might have had a rap career of her own. While taking a spin for Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke show with Girls Trip co-star Queen Latifah, she said that her high school friend Tupac Shakur wanted her to join an all-female rap group. "We had all these little corny battles 'cause we went to high school, and he wanted to put a bad-ass chick group together. He's like, 'Yo, Jada, I'ma write your raps. I'ma show you the flow,'" she said. Jada’s problem? “I couldn’t rap.” So, heavy metal it was.
