Apparently, a healthy dose of naracassism is a necessary ingrediant to art world success.

Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum and Adam Driver

Two star-studded comedic crime capers entered theaters this weekend and came out with two very different results. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson's team-up The Hitman’s Bodyguard prevailed with an estimated take of $21.6 million and first place despite middling reviews. Meanwhile, Logan Lucky, with a cast that included Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum and Adam Driver and stellar reviews, limped to the finishing line at third place with just $8 million. Apparently not many were waiting for that James Bond x Kylo Ren x Magic Mike supergroup. To hear Deadline tell it, it might very well have been a matter of marketing with both films fighting for similar demographics. Despite marking the return to film of critically beloved director Steven Soderbergh, Lucky was marketed heavily towards Southern audiences with NASCAR tie-ins galore, but that crowd just wasn’t feeling it and opted for the dream team of Deadpool and Mace Windu instead.

Confederate Statue

Last week we argued that no one deserves MTV’s Video Vanguard award more than Missy Elliott. Over the weekend, the internet got a better idea. The town square of Missy Elliott’s birthplace is currently occupied by a statue of a Confederate solider. This despite the fact that the town is over 50 percent African-American. Nathan Coflin, also a Portsmouth native, decided it might just be best to remove the soldier statue and erect one of Elliott instead. “Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it,” reads the petition. “Let us come together in getting City Council to erect this statue in honor of Missy Elliott and all those in the great City of Portsmouth who work it each and every day.” Local politicians in Portsmouth have been contemplating the fate of the Confederate statue since 2015, and the town’s mayor recently called for it to be moved to a local cemetery instead.

Art World Narcissism

Remaining Humble

So you want to be an art star? Well, the secret ingredient might be already thinking you’re an art star in your head. Finance professor Yi Zhou recently put out a paper suggesting that a modern artist’s level of success may be intrinsically linked to their perceived level of narcissism. Figuring out how to quantify success was easy: the researcher cited market price, number of exhibitions and placement in museum collections among other criteria. Figuring out how to measure narcissism was a bit trickier, but Zhou decided on number of self portraits, signature size, and how many times the artist uses the word “I” in an interview. Indeed, he found that an increase in self portraits can raise an artist’s market price by 13 percent. Overuse of “I” correlates with a 4 percent increase. Of course, maybe some artists just become more narcissistic as they become more successful. Though, such findings aren’t unique to art. Previous research has linked CEO’s narcissism to a company’s performance.
