It’s about a hitman (Samuel L. Jackson) and a bodyguard (Ryan Reynolds) who are enemies but now have to work together. It’s getting so-so write-ups, but it’s Salma Hayek, as Jackson’s foulmouthed wife, who seems to be the standout. Though, it’s Logan Lucky, director Steven Soderbergh’s return after a so-called “retirement” from film, that’s the critical standout. The film has a star-studded cast that includes everyone from Daniel Craig to Hilary Swank to Katie Holmes to Riley Kough to the guy who created Family Guy check out the trailer here. It’s sort of a red state version of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 films, except this time the heist is at a Nascar race. In limited release, it’s a face off between Sundance hit Patti Cake$, the story of an unlikely female white rapper from Jersey (read our interview with Danielle MacDonald star here) and wrongful conviction drama Crown Heights (read our interview with LaKeith Stanfield star here). | | | | Katy Perry’s Opening Acts | Katy Perry’s Tour Start Date | In this increasingly fractured world there are two classes of pop diva. There are your remaining monoculture pop divas who are omnipresent throughout the culture and who even your most out-of-it aunt can recognize. These are your Beyoncés and Britneys and Adeles. Then there are the niche pop divas who retain devoted fan bases on places like Tumblr and Twitter, but might not have had even a single hit on the radio. They're your Bankses and Robyns and Roisin Murphys. Rarely do the two intersect, unless it’s for a Katy Perry tour. The “Swish, Swish” singer has a long history of bringing lesser known but more critically adored singers on the road with her as an opening act. Robyn, Janelle Monáe, Tove Lo, Tegan and Sara, Charli XCX, AlunaGeorga, and Tinashe have all opened for Perry at one point or another. Clearly she’s not afraid of being upstaged unlike some other pop stars who are currently touring without even one opening act. Now, for her latest Witness tour she’ll bring along Carly Rae Jepsen (who once seemed destined for monoculture pop diva status, but may be queen of the niche stars) and critically adored electropop duo Purity Ring. Though, news also came on Thursday that the start of the tour has been delayed due to unforseen production problems. | | | | MTV Unplugged, Again, Maybe | Not Knowing Who Shawn Mendes Is | In an apparent rush to revive all of its former hits, MTV is bringing back its once-famed Unplugged series. The show hosted canonical acoustic performances from musical acts as varied as Nirvana, Tony Bennett and Jay-Z. Now MTV is betting on former Vine star and soft spoken teen idol Shawn Mendes to revive it. Mendes came to fame online with a series of acoustic covers of other’s songs, so it makes sense to a degree, but classic Unplugged used to have the power of drawing in the types of viewers who wouldn’t normally watch MTV otherwise. Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney did episodes back in the day. Oh well, they have to start somewhere. Here’s hoping the revival someday snags Beyoncé. | | | | | | | | | | | If you still don’t know who exactly Shawn Mendes is (something completely understandable for anyone over the age of 28), not only is he reviving Unplugged but he’s performing at next month’s VMAs and according to Billboard’s latest charts his single "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" is the most played song on pop radio across the country right now. | | | | | | | | Francis Bean Cobain, 25 (Sub Pop Scion) G Dragon, 29 (World’s Most Famous Non-American Rapper) Andy Samberg, 39 (Mr. Joanna Newsom) Edward Norton, 48 (Relatable Nerd or Wise Talking Tough Guy, Depending on the Role) Christian Slater, 48 (Former Hollywood Bad Buy) Robert Redford, 81 (Father of Sundance) | | | | | | |
