Chances are slim that you didn’t go to the movies. Collectively, the box office had its worst weekend in 15 years (and that’s not even accounting for inflation). All told, all films together only made about $49 million. Of course, it didn’t help there were hardly any new releases worth talking about. That led to The Hitman’s Bodyguard sliding into first place for a second week in a row. Of course, the nation’s entertainment attention was also otherwise fixed on the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight (which unsurprisingly saw Mayweather, the boxing legend, defeat the guy who had never boxed before) and that Game of Thrones finale (recap here). Hollywood will likely have another slow weekend over the Labor Day holiday, but things should kick up again on September 8th when the highly anticipated scary clown flick It hits theaters (watch the latest trailer here, if you’re one of the few who haven’t already). | | | | | | | While the VMAs are ostensibly supposed to honor the previous calendar year’s best music videos, the biggest talking point out of Sunday night’s show was surely Taylor Swift’s new video for her divisive electroclash-lite single “You’re Rubber and I’m Glue” or maybe it’s called “I Know You Are But What Am I?” or possibly “Look What You Made Me Do.” In any event, the video poked fun at some of the excess of her public persona: the genetically perfect (if not homogenous) girl squad, the victim playing, and the “snake” reputation, while also, in the closing seconds, doubling down on a claim that Kim Kardashian edited that infamous Snapchat dox. You can watch the whole thing here. It certainly plays to the base, and the online response doesn’t seem to indicate that it’s winning Swift any new fans. Then again, when you’re Taylor Swift, do you actually need any new fans? As for the rest of the show: Cardi B sparkled during the pre-show, Teyana Taylor channeled Janet Jackson, Ed Sheeran took home artist of the year, and Kendrick Lamar, who arguably gave the night's best performance, took home video of the year for "Humble." Of course, you can see all the most notable fashion moments here. | | | | | | | We’ve seen the American Horror Story: Cult trailer, and we still have no idea what the season is going to be about. Oh, sure, we know specific elements of what to expect, but how will it come together? Well, Ryan Murphy just added a few more pieces to the puzzle over the weekend by dropping some select tea according to Entertainment Weekly. Lena Dunham will play Valarie Solanas. You know, the woman who authored the SCUM Manifesto and then attempted to murder Andy Warhol. Billy Eichner will play a suburban bee keeper. Emma Roberts plays a TV news anchor who will do anything to get to the top (no, her character isn’t Megyn Kelly). Meanwhile, Evan Peters (seen in the trailer as some sort of Trump-humping alt-right figure) will also play Charles Manson, Jim Jones, David Koresh and Andy Warhol (somehow he’s now been promoted to Jessica Lange). Murphy clarified that while there are of course elements relating to Trump, the season will really be about the “cult of personality.” As for all the bees in the promo material, well, he says they’re the real cult. Meanwhile, we’re starting to feel like a cult member for continuing to watch this show, but what can you do? | | | | | | | | | | | Meet Coco, the Japanese 6-year-old who is taking the Instagram style influencer world by storm.
