The Movies. There’s Nothing Out.

Yikes! A sad week in the movie theaters (the widest release is a Canadian animated ballerina flick most people know because it features Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Cut to the Feeling”). Thankfully, there’s more than enough diversions elsewhere. There’s that big Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight (which will feature designer labels in each fighter’s corner). Netflix has a big budget (and controversial original horror-thriller flick in the form of anime-adaptation Death Note. Sunday also brings the season finale of Game of Thrones, as if there’s a need to remind anyone who planned on watching. Violence not your thing? Well, there’s also lots of pop music this weekend! Showtime has the premiere of heralded Whitney Houston documentary Whitney: Can I Be Me? The film delves into Houston’s life, the strife between her public and private selves, her addiction, and her possible bisexuality. For something more lighthearted, there’s MTV’s Video Music Awards (an event which is basically the Wrestlemania of pop music and always an occasion for some interesting fashion). Katy Perry hosts this year and producers still aren’t sure what’s going to happen, but they promise it’ll be good. They swear.

But Not Keeping Up With The Kids

If you happen to be a mature person who does not spend their entire day on the internet (well, good for you), then perhaps many of the references in Katy Perry’s “Swish, Swish” video went over your head. A lot of them were allusions to weird internet memes, and we’ve got a handy guide to them here. You may also find, if you choose to tune into Sunday’s VMAs, that you aren’t aware of about half the performers. Here’s a quick rundown. Julia Michaels is a nice blond girl from Iowa who wrote a lot of hit songs for other celebrities (including Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”), so now she’s starting her own singing career. In that he got his start online, sings and is Canadian, Shawn Mendes is sort of like Bieber but he’s very polite, plays guitar, and has not dated Selena Gomez. Logic is a white boy emo rapper. Post Malone is a white boy country rapper. Khalid is a smooth, charismatic R&B singer who wants to be your less mysterious Frank Ocean. Bleachers is just the guy who dates Lena Dunham and writes Taylor Swift songs. Cardi B is a reality TV personality and Instagram celeb who raps now. Rod Stewart is also performing, maybe just so no one who tunes in feels too old. Regular people like Miley Cyrus, Lorde and The Weeknd are also performing.

Any End In Sight For Comic Book Movies

Jared Leto is also performing at the VMAs with his band 30 Seconds to Mars, but he’ll be quite busy in the coming years playing the Joker. Warner Bros. announced that a stand-alone film featuring only his Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is now in development (this is in addition to another Harley Quinn movie where she teams up with other female Batman villains). The news comes just a day after Warner also announced that there is the possibility of Martin Scorsese being involved in another Joker movie. This one would focus on the villainous clown’s origin story, and Leto would not play the part. Scorsese would merely produce, while The Hangover’s Todd Phillips would direct. There is no end to comic book movie mania in sight, and by the end of it everyone in Hollywood will have been roped into one project or another.
