“The future rewards those who press on. I don't have time to feel sorry for myself. I don't have time to complain. I'm going to press on."

The Dark Tower

The wide-release opening of Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit is the cultural headline at the box office this weekend. Yes, an Oscar winning auteur’s take on a difficult and serious topic-police violence during Detroit's 1967 12th Street Riot-is headlining the first weekend of August. Critics, however, are mesmerized, with the Chicago Sun-Times calling it a “searing, pulse-pounding, shocking and deeply effective dramatic interpretation of events.” (Be sure to read our interview with co-star Will Poulter). For something a little lighter, there’s Halle Berry’s Kidnap, something of a mother’s take on the Liam Neeson-starring Taken franchise. It’s getting reviews quite similar to that series as well, which is to say “mixed.” Yet, those who like it are reveling in its pure, dumb summer fun. Screen Daily sums up the sympathetic critics' take by writing, “Kidnap is unadulterated B-movie nonsense, but when it’s delivered with this level of trashy gusto, the pleasures are plentiful.” Surely seems more fun than The Dark Tower. Starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, the flick is supposed to kick off a multimedia franchise that tie several Stephen King-based properties together, but according to the critics can barely kickstart its own plot.

Björk’s Tinder Album

Swiping Left

On Wednesday, Björk surprisingly announced that she had a new album ready to go and available for pre-order. On Thursday in an interview with Dazed, she gave an even more surprising account of the inspiration behind the album: Tinder. Over dealing with the heartbreak that came with the dissolution of her union with Matthew Barney, she told the outlet, “This is like my Tinder album. It’s about that search (for utopia)–and about being in love. Spending time with a person you enjoy is when the dream becomes real.” Of course, Björk has already given us quite the soundtrack for Tinder. What better song for the moment when you’re searching through 100 selfies for the perfect profile pic than “Army of Me?” For when they send you a scandalous pic and you’re into it: “Big Time Sensuality.” When they leave you unread: “It’s Oh So Quiet.” For when they ask you if you’re free next Tuesday: “Possibly Maybe.” For when you’ve spent an hour swiping, come across someone with pictures from a Trump rally who says they’re just looking for someone “chill” and “no drama” and then, after swiping left, discover there’s no one left in your area: “I’ve Seen It All.”

Moisturizer

Dame Helen Mirren has a contract with one of the biggest beauty and skincare companies on the planet, and she absolutely loves it! She does! She’s just not completely convinced all skincare products work. During an appearance for L’Oreal in the South of France, Mirren reportedly said that moisturizer “probably does f--- all”. (Though, scientists, doctors and skincare professionals would disagree).  Though, Mirren says she still uses moisturizer. “It just makes me feel better,” she says. So there’s that. Elsewhere during the appearance, Mirren says she worries that she’s sold out during her career and worries, “there’s a part of me that thinks I should have been a struggling artist.” But then she couldn’t afford nearly as nice moisturizer, and the world would be deprived of the candor of Dame Helen Mirren.
