In: Wonder Woman’s Triple Crown Success | Out: D.C. Society

Wonder Woman was a success on every front and even shattered a record along the way.

Excuses for Not Making More Female Superhero Movies

Wonder Woman proved triumphant by scoring what may essentially be the triple crown of blockbuster receptions: critics love it (it currently holds a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences loved it (it received an ‘A’ from theater goer-survey company CinemaScore), and it made a boatload of money ($100.5 million domestically, and a global take of $223 million). It also made history by becoming the highest grossing opening film ever directed a woman, supplanting Sam Taylor-Johnson’s 50 Shades of Grey in the process. That must feel sweet for director Patty Jenkins. After breaking through with 2003’s Monster, Hollywood hasn’t been sure what to do with her. At one point she was signed on to direct the second Thor movie over at Marvel, but was let go before production began under uncertain circumstances (star Natalie Portman, who was instrumental in bringing her onboard, was reportedly quite upset, and, perhaps tellingly, hasn’t appeared in a Marvel movie since). She now stands alone in the record books. Character-wise, it’s also a triumph for Wonder Woman. This $100 million-plus debut has only been surpassed by Deadpool and Spider-Man in their first time out as a solo star of a modern blockbuster movie (at least in unadjusted 2017 dollars), and she certainly did better than the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and Thor just to name a few. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait until 2019 for the next big female superhero movie: Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, which, by the way, will also be co-directed by a woman.

Washington D.C.’s Grand Society Circuit?

Kellyanne Conway’s Common Sense

There was once a time when Washington D.C. power players enjoyed quite the society circuit full of legendary hostesses and frequent soirees. While few voters in today’s populist climate may care that members of Congress no longer enjoy quite as many Champagne and caviar affairs at each other’s homes, it’s worth noting that in the golden days those parties would be bipartisan affairs. Wouldn’t it be better if both Republicans and Democrats spent their off time entertaining each other instead of flinging attempted zingers at each other on Twitter? Maybe. Well, Kellyanne Conway is finally settling into her new Massachussetts Avenue Heights and tells Mansion Global that she wants nothing more than to be a traditional D.C. hostess. “I intend to dive into social hosting,” she tells the niche publication. Could Conway be the society scene-maker D.C. may need? Or does this impulse give a bit of a revealing look into her psyche. Unlike many in the Trump administration, Conway is a veteran beltway insider and maybe there’s part of her that truly thinks eventually at some point during the Trump administration D.C. is going to settle back down back into its former normative state.

Your Expectation of Just How Much GoT Content

HBO’s mega hit Game of Thrones has just two more seasons left, but the premium network isn’t going to let the franchise go dark completely. News broke earlier this year that there were four spin-off prequel series in the works (a first for HBO overall), but programming president Casey Bloys wanted to clarify some of those reports with Entertainment Weekly. Actually, there’s five different projects in the works. However, don’t expect all of them to actually get made. “That’s not what’s going on. The idea is not to do four shows,” he said. “The bar set by [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it.” Bloys also clarified that those showrunners will not be involved in any prequel projects, and told fans that it may be quite a while until anything else in the extended GoT universe actually premieres. “If any of these scripts come to pass, you’re not going to see anything air anytime close to the season 8 finale.”
