Steven Spielberg

Who doesn’t love Steven Spielberg? He’s America’s Hollywood uncle. For a certain generation some of his film practically raised us when our parents weren’t around. Of course, even beloved icons aren’t above approach. While being honored at a Women in Film event in Hollywood, actress and director Elizabeth Banks took the opportunity to point out that he has a sorry track record with female-driven films. “I went to Indiana Jones and Jaws and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made, and by the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your ass out, but it’s true.” As it turns out, there was 1985’s The Color Purple and an underrated '70s film with Goldie Hawn called The Sugarland Express long before he was famous, plus, there were the strong supporting female roles in all of the Indiana Jones films, including Cate Blanchett in the last episode. Of course, Spielberg is far form the only power-director with few films with female leads under his belt (let’s start with Martin Scorsese on our list of other examples), and that’s a bigger part of the problem as well. At least Spielberg’s next film will have Meryl Streep sharing top-billing with Tom Hanks. It’s never too late to try and be more inclusive.

Objectifying Colin Farrell

Shoulder Modesty

You know who doesn’t have a problem making movies with female leads? Sofia Coppola. She’s also not afraid to relegate male actors to objectified eye candy. “I really made this movie for my gay men friends. And for my women friends!” she recently told Vulture about her new flick The Beguiled. “I have a friend, Fabrizio [Viti], who’s a shoe designer, and he really pushed me to embrace the idea of objectifying a man’s body.” In case you’re wondering which male gets objectified in the movie: well, Colin Farrell is the only major male cast member among a seas of female superstars. Though, she’s not afraid of playing around with the idea of female objectification through the male gaze. She’s taken to nicknaming the flick “1860s Girls Gone Wild,” and took an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden to show the world what that would actually look like. Hint: it involves an in-character Kirsten Dunst seductively exposing her *gasp* shoulder.

Old Grammy Voters

Are Grammy honchos just as puzzled as the general public about the fact that Beyoncé didn’t win Album of the Year? Who knows, but they’ve certainly decided to do some recent soul searching and questioning of their practices. After talking to voting members they realized that a lot of younger music industry folks don’t like that you have to vote for the awards by mail, and many ended up skipping voting all together because they were off on tour. That may or may not be why Adele ended up beating Bey, but the Grammys have decided to finally introduced online voting. They’re also extending the practice of nominating committees that have the power to override the popular vote when it comes to the nomination round of more genres, including, most notably, rap. Even musicians in hip hop thought that the nominees in those categories had become a bit too dependent on bigger name stars over actual quality. The Grammys are the oddest bird in the big four awards ceremonies and perhaps get it wrong more than any, so any effort at reform is welcome.

Sienna Miller
@SiennaThing

Sienna Miller, the cinematic It girl of the ‘00s, has largely avoided social media until now. She’s finally given in and started an Instagram, and seemed to be egged on in part by none other than Cara Delevingne.
