ScarJo In The City Where The Heat is On

Cars 3, the latest in Pixar’s “Hey, not everything we do has to be an emotionally gutting masterpiece” franchise, cruised, as expected, to first place with $53.5 million. Wonder Woman continued its amazing run, falling to second place but pulling in an impressive $40.8 in its third weekend. It’s very possible the film could end up the highest grossing of the rebooted DC universe films. Though, the truly interesting stories lie beyond the top two. Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me overperformed with a $27 million take. Not even bad reviews or anger from Jada Pinkett Smith could keep it down. Mandy Moore’s shark flick 47 Meters Down existed and did $11.5 million. The real loser this weekend was the Scarlett Johansson-starring bad girls comedy Rough Night. The film brought it just $8 million (about half of what was expected) and only managed a 7th place finish. Was it because audiences are sick of the “wild party weekend” mini-genre brought on by The Hangover franchise? Or were people put off by the fact that it’s a comedy with a plot that revolves around an actual murder of a stripper? Whatever the case, audiences stayed away in droves.

The Alt-Right

As recently as last week members of the political movement formerly known as the alt-right had tried to brand themselves as merely noble defenders of free speech and expression. Of course when they heard that New York’s Shakespeare In The Park staged a rendition of Julius Caesar with the main character costumed to look sort of like Donald Trump, some members of the tribe staged a controversy that they could use to garner attention for themselves and decided, actually, they weren’t so into free speech after all and decided to become activist censors. The production was interrupted not once but twice over the weekend. Never mind the fact that reimagining Shakespeare plays by drawing comparisons to modern times through changing the setting and costuming is so commonplace that the same company had staged an Obama-inspired version of Caesar in 2012. The controversy? Caesar dies in the play, as anyone with a high school English education could tell you. Nevermind either that half the point of the play is that political violence is misguided. No word, however, on whether the right wing plans to apologize for calling Hillary Clinton “Lady Macbeth” for decades.

Stefano Gabbana’s Instagram

Boy oh boy does Stefano Gabbana love to start drama on Instagram! The designer recently caused a dustup with his full fledged embrace of First Lady Melania Trump and her frequent choice to wear Dolce & Gabbana clothes. After some comment section backlash, the brand responded by selling t-shirts that read #Boycott Dolce & Gabbana for $245. Perhaps the brand’s menswear show in Milan over the weekend would be  as good as an excuse as ever to cool down and put the episode in the rearview mirror. After all, the brand once again cast notable celebrity scions like Rafferty Law, the Stallone sisters, and, in a bipartisan-twist, Tyler Clinton (nephew of Bill and “Lady Macbeth”). Miley Cyrus’s younger brother Braison also walked and the singer feted her lil bro on Instagram, but also added, “PS D&G, I STRONGLY disagree with your politics...but I do support your company's effort to celebrate young artists.” Well Gabbana clapped right back on the ‘Gram with his own post stating, “We are Italian and we don't care about politics and mostly neither about the American one! We make dresses and if you think about doing politics with a post it's simply ignorant. We don't need your posts or comments so next time please ignore us!!” Noted.

Philipp Plein
@PhilippPlein78

D&G aren’t the only brand with a thing for casting Scions and minor celebs. German-born designer Philipp Plein’s own menswear show in Milan included Jeremy “Hot Felon” Meeks and Presley “Son of Cindy Crawford” Gerber. It also included this giant Mercedes monster-esque truck. Fashion in Milan isn’t known for its subtlety.
