The Globe and Mail calls it “a very expensive middle finger to common sense and the basic concept of entertainment.” USA Today chimes in, saying it’s a “painfully long two and half hours.” Luckily, at least for those in big cities, there’s tons of great movies in limited release. Sofia Coppola’s take on Southern Gothic with The Beguiled is certainly the headliner. It won her best director at Cannes after all. The Big Sick, an unexpected twist on the rom-com genre, charmed everyone at Sundance. If you’re still looking for other options, there’s The Bad Batch, a dystopian thriller that marks British ‘It’ girl Suki Waterhouse’s first starring role. | | | | | | | Maybe the real story in entertainment this weekend is not on movie screens. The reviews seem to indicate that GLOW may very well be Netflix’s next big must-watch series. Based on an actual all-female professional wrestling promotion from the ‘80s and produced by Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, the new series is both laugh-out-loud funny and a clever and pointed deconstruction of female stereotypes. While the series is packed full of potential breakout characters, it’s an overdue star-making turn for lead Alison Brie following her supporting roles in beloved series like Mad Men and Community. Elsewhere on the dial, proving that seemingly everything can be rebooted, PBS is premiering a prequel to beloved British detective series Prime Suspect on Sunday. The original started all the way back in 1991 (but only had 15 episodes-did we mention it’s British?) and has won star Helen Mirren tons of awards. The new version finds Stefanie Martini playing Mirren’s character as a young woman just starting out on the police force back in the ‘70s. The reviews are lukewarm at best, and comparing Martini’s performance to Mirren’s isn’t doing the younger actress any favors. | | | | Jennifer Lopez’s Schedule | Always Lounging Poolside with A-Rod | Check the gossip columns and it seems like Jennifer Lopez is one long world tour of leisure with her new beau Alex Rodriguez, but the queen is actually always hard at work. She’s currently starring in NBC’s summer show World of Dance, which we declare “heartbreaking, staggering tv.” She also just signed on to star in her first romantic comedy in quite some time. It’s called Second Act, and sees J.Lo playing a big box store employee who makes it on Madison Avenue. She’s also busy shooting another season of drama series Shades of Blue, and has a live version of Bye Bye Birdie! and a Griselda Blanco biopic for HBO still reportedly in the works. Pay no attention to the poolside paparazzi pictures. She’s quite busy actually. | | | | | | | | | | | Let model Amilna Estevao show you how to make sweats and leather both summer appropriate and appealing. | | | | | | | | Joel Edgerton, 43 (Mr. Loving) Selma Blair, 45 (Underappreciated Teen Film Icon) Frances McDormand, 60 (The Original Marge) | | | | | | |
