In: Supermodels Over 70 | Out: 1000-Year-Old Mummies

Tom Cruise’s The Mummy arrives with a thud. Likewise for Dolce & Gabbana’s “boycott” movement.

Monster Movies

Universal Pictures decided it wanted one of their own fancy “Cinematic Universe” franchises like those based on Marvel and D.C. Comics, and looked back into its archive and realized, “Oh, yeah, we were famous back in the day for making movies based on monsters.” So they’ve decided to update those properties (Frankenstein’s Monster, Van Helsing, The Invisible Man et. al.) as a star-studded interconnected franchise dubbed the “Dark Universe.” The first film, The Mummy, arrives in cinemas this weekend with Tom Cruise as its star but is already facing intense critical drubbing. IndieWire called it the “worst Tom Cruise movie ever,” and that’s not even the biggest slap out there. Faring better with critics is the Joel Edgerton-starring It Comes At Night, a mysterious and stylish horror movie that critics say does its job at scaring you. Of course, it's very, very likely that in the end Wonder Woman will repeat for the top spot at the box office this weekend anyway.

Subtlety

Among the few figures in fashion who seems unapologetically proud to have Melania Trump don his designs is Dolce & Gabbana co-designer Stefano Gabbana. Anytime the first lady wears one of his outfits (and it's been quite often) he’s posted pictures on his personal Instagram and publicly thanked her. Of course, like anyone anywhere who has posted anything even vaguely Trump-related on the internet in the past two years, this has caused some controversy. Though there was no organized efforts to actually boycott his brand, some people left the hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana in the comments. The designer took notice and decided to respond by selling t-shirts urging people to #Boycott the brand. The brand even shot a short film with a staged protest to announce the shirt. This is what one might consider “doing the most,” but, really, that’s been a guiding ethos over the brand’s 37-year history in all matters.

Pretty Young Things

Recently, both Bottega Veneta and Raf Simon’s Calvin Klein have called on the services of Lauren Hutton, the 73-year-old American model icon. Though Hutton may be the most famous, she’s not the only septuagenarian model veteran still capable of working the look. Veruschka (also known legally as Countess Vera von Lehndorff-Steinort) was a top model back in the ‘60s who may best be known for her appearance in Blow Up, one of fashion’s favorite cult films of all time. Well, beloved Swiss brand Acne Studios decided to enlist the 78-year-old model to show off their resort collection, and the resulting photos prove that fierceness does not have expiration date.
