Stan Smith and Chuck Taylor were actual basketball players, after all. These days though top athletic gear companies are just as likely to sign up some of the top Instagram-famous models as they are the next round of NBA all-stars (indeed this year’s No. 2 pick in the NBA draft wasn’t signed by any of the sneaker companies at all. Gigi Hadid had a deal with Reebok, while sister Bella is the latest face of Nike. Kylie Jenner has a thing with Puma, and, now, finally, Kendall Jenner just signed on as the latest ambassador for Adidas Originals. Considering that those companies are going just as much for the fashion dollar as they are the actual athletics dollar these days it all makes sense. For the purists out there: also remember that Taylor of Chucks fames wasn’t actually a very good basketball player (he claimed to have played professional, but no one has ever confirmed that), and the guy was more of socially-connected athletic influencer of his time. Yet, he has the top-selling sneaker of all time named after him. | | | | | | | Speaking of the ways things used to be, remember when every pop star had a perfume? Jennifer Lopez’s Glow was at one point the second best-selling fragrance in America, and Britney Spears now has more than twenty different scents to her name. Those lines can still be profitable (even Christina Aguilera's still does well enough that she released her 11th fragrance just this year). These days though the real hot thing is to move beyond just scents and have an entire cosmetics range. In a series of Instagram posts on Wednesday, Rihanna confirmed her long rumored Fenty Beauty range with a promised release date of 2017. Likewise, Mariah Carey, according to the gossips anyway, is looking to start not only her own makeup line but an entire brick-and-mortar cosmetics store somewhere in Beverly Hills. Sure, pop stars have dabbled in collaborations with existing lines before, but there’s certainly more money to be made in the $62 billion dollar American beauty market with an ongoing line. If pop stars can conquer perfumes, it’s no wonder they’re going for lipsticks and foundations as well. | | | | Netflix’s Huge Humblebrag | The Next Season of Your Favorite Netflix Show | Last week, Netflix made the surprising decision to cancel The Get Down after a single season, making it one of the few shows on the service to go one-and-done. Even some less popular Netflix offerings went two or three seasons. Well, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings thinks the service should be canceling more shows, but not for the reason you think. Turns out he thinks it might be better for business if they didn’t have quite as high of a hit rate. “Our hit ratio is way too high right now,” Hastings said on CNBC yesterday. “So, we’ve canceled very few shows…I’m always pushing the content team: We have to take more risks, you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.” Basically he’s saying that Netflix should take even more risks on weirder or less guaranteed-for-success shows because sometimes they can blow up into phenomenons like 13 Reasons Why or Stranger Things. If not? Well, just cancel them after 12 episodes. Traditional networks do it all the time. This is essentially a huge humblebrag on Hastings’ part, but we greatly anticipate the weird, risky shows to come. | | | | | | | | | | | 50 Shades actress descends from Hollywood royalty Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson (and let's not forget grandma is Tippi Hedren), but she’s not the only princess in the castle. She showed up front row at the Gucci resort show with her two younger half-sisters from both sides of her family: Grace, daughter of Don and his current wife socialite Kelley Phleger, and Stella Banderas-Griffith, daughter of Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Though, on Grace’s Instagram you’re likely to see more examples of her photography work than selfies, rare for an up-and-coming Hollywood scion. | | | | | | | | Tom Holland, 21 (Rihanna Impersonator) Amy Schumer, 36 (Comedy Lightning Rod) Alanis Morissette, 43 (Aspiring Broadway Impresario) Heidi Klum, 44 (Germany’s Tyra Banks) Morgan Freeman, 80 (The Voice) | | | | | | |
