Moms Who Are Bad

Critics, fans, and just about anyone with a pulse agrees that this weekend’s must-see movie is Thor: Ragnarok. Even people who don’t know what a “Ragnarok” is are thrilled. With the film’s nonstop action, its wicked sense of humor, and, of course, an absolutely ethereal-looking Cate Blanchett as its main villain, some are saying it may be one of Marvel’s best efforts to date. Chris Hemsworth certainly doesn’t hurt either. Looking for counterprogramming? Well, surprise comedy hit Bad Moms expands into a full-fledged franchise with A Bad Moms Christmas. Reviews aren’t great, but, hey, Susan Sarandon, Christine Baranski, and Cheryl Hines join the original crew as the moms’s moms. In the indie-sphere, there’s My Friend Dahmer, a creepy origin story for the noted serial killer that should help star Ross Lynch move beyond his Disney Channel past. Speaking of TV, the big binge this weekend is Netflix’s Alias Grace. After The Handmaid’s Tale, it’s the second show this year adapted from a Margaret Atwood novel, and critics seem to think it’s just as good (watch the trailer here.

Celebrities have always had a thing for the countryside. Brad and Angelina used to live on a vineyard in France. Demi and Bruce raised their kids on a ranch in Idaho. Everyone from Zach Galifianakis to Russell Crowe have their own farms. Now Zayn Malik is the latest to ride the trend. He’s pretty much spent much of his year tending to horses and cows on a remote farm in the Pennsylvania countryside (it reminds him of the rural British town where he grew up). And while he’ll occasionally work on music there, he’s apparently just appreciating escaping the limelight and finding some alone time. Of course, friends and collaborators still visit him, and, don’t worry, girlfriend Gigi Hadid is a frequent presence.

Awards Shows Hosted by Women

The Jimmys (Nothing Personal)

A woman hasn’t hosted one of the major awards shows in two years, and it seems that given the many sexual harassment and misconduct scandals that have finally come to light in recent weeks, now would be a wonderful time for a woman’s voice to preside over some of Hollywood’s most celebrated nights, like the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Unfortunately, both ceremonies have already booked their next hosts. They’re the same as last year’s. Yes, both the Jimmys, Fallon and Kimmel, are returning. Nothing against them personally, but is this not a year in which it would be more than appropriate, if not necessary, to give a woman the job? After all, Kevin Spacey has hosted more major awards ceremonies in recent years than has the entire female gender.
