Pixar’s Coco is off to a good start with a $71 million opening over five days that outperformed expectations, and a rare A+ CinemaScore from opening night audiences. Pixar’s first film with a Hispanic lead (and Disney’s first to be set in Latin America since 2000’s The Emperor’s New Groove) should get used to holding down the number one spot. It won’t have much in the way of blockbuster competition until the next Star Wars opens on December 15. The only downside in seeing it? You have to sit through a 21-minute short starring the snowman from Frozen that audiences—at least the adult portion—seem to absolutely loathe. Meanwhile, Justice League slipped to number two with $60 million. It’s not seeing quite as large as a second week slip experienced by other recent divisive DC movies like Suicide Squad, but maybe that’s because it didn’t have quite as far to fall in the first place. In the indie-sphere, the eagerly awaited Call Me by Your Name opened in four cinemas with the highest per-screen gross of the year at roughly $101,000 per theater, which, incidentally, is almost the exact same business eventual Best Picture winner Moonlight did during its opening weekend last year.

The annual Bal des Debutantes is to prom what the Met Gala is to, I don’t know, a cocktail party at a museum. It’s a big deal and completely over the top. Twenty young women from notable families across the globe are invited to Paris to wear haute couture dresses, don stunning jewelry, and make their official society debut...well, at least as much as one can in these social media-heavy days. To Americans, this year’s most notable participant was Ava Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon’s look-alike daughter. The young Californian wore a gold Giambattista Valli dress that lended itself well to be twirled on the dance floor by her official escort, Maharaja Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur, an Indian noble who plays polo with Prince William. Other participants this year included Lori Harvey, the stepdaughter of Steve Harvey who wore Elie Saab; Cecily Lasnet, daughter of the model Stella Tennant; Ananya Panday, daughter of a Bollywood star; Spanish noble Amina Martínez de Irujo; and Paris McCaw, the daughter of an American cell phone industry pioneer. Imagine if instead of Titanic opening with an elderly Rose telling her story to a crew of treasure hunters, it had opened with Rose’s great-granddaughter crawling into her lap and asking, “How did you and papa meet?” She then looks over at a still-living Jack and says, “Well, darling, 1,500 people died in a cruel tragedy, especially among the lower classes on board, but the important thing is we found each other!” That would have been a horrible movie! It’s based on a tragedy; was anyone to expect a happy ending? And yet, some people swear up and down that both Rose and Jack should have lived because they both could have fit on that damned door. Well, director James Cameron has a message for those people: No! When asked by Vanity Fair why Rose didn’t make some room, Cameron replied, “The answer is very simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies. Very simple.” He then goes on to suppose he could have found some other way to kill Jack, like a smokestack crushing him. “Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless...The film is about death and separation; he had to die.” Though, Cameron does defend the physics behind the scene, saying that the buoyancy of the door was tested to ensure that it could have only held one person.
