Strict Notions of Comedy

The exact dimensions of awards season are taking shape, and Get Out just clarified a big question. It will compete as a comedy at the Golden Globes (and, presumably, other minor awards that draw genre distinctions). While, true, it is a horror movie, it does have plenty of laughs and was directed by actual comedian Jordan Peele. So its claim to the genre is a bit stronger than that of other recent films that have made the category move, like The Martian and My Week With Marilyn. The move should ensure greater visibility for the film on the awards circuit, a possible nomination for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya, and, presumably, help its Oscars chances. Now the biggest GG question is which side of the genre divide Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri will compete in. A dark comedy of the darkest variety, it could make a case for either. Otherwise, the rest of the comedy/musical field will likely include some combination of I, Tonya, The Big Sick, The Greatest Showman (which, incidentally, just released a new trailer), Lady Bird, Downsizing, and Battle of the Sexes. Adjust your awards pools accordingly (or start drumming up your Girls Trip dark horse campaign).

Nancy Meyers’s What Women Want was a perfectly fine early aughts rom-com that has the terrible misfortune of having had Mel Gibson as its star. It’s much less fun to watch Gibson get the power to hear women’s private thoughts now that we’ve all heard many of his very public, sexist words. Thankfully, Hollywood is doing us a solid by remaking the movie…with Taraji P. Henson. Yes, the Empire star will lead a gender-flipped remake of the movie called, obviously, What Men Want. She’ll star as a sports agent who suddenly gets the power to read men’s minds and hopes to land a star basketball client along the way. The film already has a January 2019 release date, so the package is definitely a go. Now the only question is how far, exactly, the film will go. Some men, as you’re more than aware, especially lately, can think some pretty horrible things.

No offense to Gwen Stefani, but People magazine’s choice of Blake Shelton as its Sexiest Man Alive just seems...off. He’s like your dad’s friend who drives a Chevy and your mom doesn’t like coming over on weekdays. He’s not even the sexiest country music star. Nor is he the sexiest person on The Voice. He’s not even the sexiest man to have dated Gwen Stefani. Rugged, sturdy, handsome, perhaps. But, sexy? When Oscar Isaac is out there? When there are still at least other people named Chris in Hollywood who haven’t received the award? We’ve selected some of our alternative choices here. Though, we should note that it should seem obvious to everyone that the sexiest man actually has to agree to the title by, you know, showing up to the cover photo shoot. (Relax, Ryan Gosling diehards, could you actually imagine your man doing that?) So take the title with a grain of salt.
