Wonder Woman’s Teammates
Hoping that Wonder Woman would signal a complete turnaround in the quality of DC superhero movies? Well, you might have to wait a bit longer. The reviews for Justice League range from “meh” to outright hostile. “The film is, plainly stated, terrible, and I’m sorry that everyone wasted their time and money making it,” writesVanity Fair. The kinder reviews are more along the lines of “Well, at least it’s better than Batman v Superman!” So, what to see instead? Well, Wonder, which stars Jacob Tremblay as a boy with facial deformities, isn’t a revelation of filmmaking, but critics agree it’s cute and charming. Chilean festival hit A Fantastic Woman, which stars trans actress Daniela Vega, makes its debut in select cities. Though, perhaps the best film is on Netflix. Dee Rees’s Mudbound, which features a revelatory Mary J. Blige in a supporting role, was bought up by the streamer at the Sundance Film Festival and premieres today both online and in 17 theaters in order to make it eligible for the Oscars. It will almost certainly walk away with at least a few nominations.

We didn’t think much of Search Party when TBS started promoting it last year. Did the world need another Brooklyn-based hipster show? Then we actually watched it, and it sucked us in with its weird, mystery tale only to pull the rug out from under viewers and set up a totally new direction for the second season, which again made us wonder if season two would even be worth it. According to the critics, it will be. “Season 2 is the same savvy, searching series it was in Season 1; it’s just reversed the formula,” writes IndieWire. The show returns Sunday at 10 p.m. Looking for a comedy that doesn’t involve murder? Hulu has There’s...Johnny!, a nostalgic tale about a 19-year-old in 1972 who scores an intern gig at Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. Netflix gives us new seasons of both Longmire and The Punisher. Of course, the big event broadcast of the weekend is Sunday night’s American Music Awards on ABC. It promises us Selena Gomez’s first live performance since her surgery, a duet between Pink and Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera doing a tribute to Whitney Houston, a bunch of kids (i.e. Shawn Mendes, Nick Jonas, Alessia Cara, etc, etc.), and the exact opposite of a bunch of kids: Diana Ross.

Good Ideas
While you’re trying to figure out what to watch this weekend, Hollywood is already trying to figure out next year. Boy, do they have some interesting ideas. Remember Jean Dujardin, the guy who won the Oscar in 2011 for The Artist? Yeah, well, ABC has signed him for a police procedural called The French Detective. Luc Besson, the oddball sci-fi director behind The Fifth Element and Valerian, is also on board as director. Meanwhile, remember that show Castle? If not, you probably have an aunt who does. Well, ABC has ordered a new show from its creators that basically sounds like their old show, except this time, the lead is a woman played by Rachel Bilson. The network is also developing a show where an entire town sings and dances instead of talking like normal people. The twist: The town is rocked by a brutal, unsolved murder. Now seems like a good time to remind everyone that Netflix stole super-producer Shonda Rhimes away from ABC, and now the network has to figure out its drama lineup without her.
