Call Me by Your Name, Finally

The Best Actor Race

Despite the film already amassing a pretty astonishing and passionate online fan base, Call Me by Your Name has not actually been screened for the general public yet. That changes, finally, on Friday. The film has gathered near universal rave reviews, a pack-leading six nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, plenty of buzz for its young newcomer lead, Timothée Chalamet, and tons of fantasies about its other lead, Armie Hammer. It also involves a peach. It features a super sensual romance at its core, so maybe not the best movie to take your family to when everyone is in town for Thanksgiving. However, two movies released on Wednesday offer other compelling options. Coco, the Día de los Muertos–themed musical mystery, holds up Pixar’s streak of quality family fare. Meanwhile, Gary Oldman is getting serious Oscar buzz for his role as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour. Though, according to the prognosticators he might have quite the competition from Chalamet. In fact, in a year when the best actress race is totally overshadowing its male counterparts, this might be the most exciting week for male performances of the year.

Logging Off

Netflix is almost single-handedly here to give you something to do other than make small talk with your uncle this holiday. The service is the only major TV outlet releasing big new programs over the next five days, and they’re releasing a lot of it. Indeed, there might be something for everyone. On Wednesday we get Godless, Steven Soderbergh’s miniseries about a mining town in the Old West run by women with Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery, and Jeff Daniels. Then on Thursday we get the series remake of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It about Nola Darling, a sex-positive, polyamorous, pansexual juggling three men at the same time. They’re also giving us: 1) Barbra: The Music... The Mem'ries... The Magic!, a musical documentary about, well, if you can’t tell which Barbra it’s about from the title alone, it’s probably not for you, 2) Cuba and the Cameraman, a documentary where the director visits three families on the island nation over 45 years, and 3) the second season of Frontier, a show that stars Jason Momoa as an outlaw who sets out to disrupt Canadian fur trade in the 1700s. We didn’t even know there was a first season of this, but apparently a third is already in the works. Or you could just actually interact with your friends and family and limit your television viewing to the parade and an occasional glance at football.

Thanksgiving has something of a reputation as being the time to make big announcements to your family, but Hollywood stars can’t wait that long. Indeed, Chrissy Teigen decided to let the world know on Tuesday that she was expecting baby number two with husband John Legend (baby number one, Luna, adorably made the announcement on Instagram). Word also broke that Gwyneth Paltrow is engaged. Yes, the Goop queen is ready to give marriage another go, this time with Glee and American Horror Story producer Brad Falchuk. Which seems random, until you remember the pair has been dating since 2014. Should we expect any or all rumored-to-be-pregnant Kardashian-Jenners to break some news over the holiday weekend as well? ’Tis the season.
