Every Oscars season, there’s always that small handful of prestige films that hold off screening for anyone until the very last moment and, once debuted, threaten to blow up any preconceived notion about awards favorites. This year those movies couldn’t be bigger: There’s Stephen Spielberg's The Post, which stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, which will mark Daniel Day-Lewis’s last acting role. Well, guess what? People have finally seen them. In early reviews, The Post is getting raves. The National Board of Review not only named it best film of the year, but checked Streep and Hanks as best actress and actor, respectively. As an ever-timely movie about the press taking on a corrupt administration, this thing may just end up crushing the competition. Meanwhile, critics aren’t allowed to talk about Phantom Thread yet, but star Day-Lewis is. In fact, he gave his first interview since announcing his retirement to W. “Before making the film, I didn’t know I was going to stop acting,” he says. “I do know that Paul and I laughed a lot before we made the movie. And then we stopped laughing because we were both overwhelmed by a sense of sadness. That took us by surprise: We didn’t realize what we had given birth to.”

In other awards show news, the Grammy nominations kind of just appeared Tuesday morning and the Recording Academy decided this is the year they’re finally really, really going to get into hip-hop and R&B. Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, and Childish Gambino will battle it out for Best Album alongside Lorde, while SZA was the most recognized female artist overall. Meanwhile, pop stars like Katy Perry and Harry Styles were completely shut out, while Ed Sheeran found himself with just a single nomination. Meanwhile, Kesha found herself with her first nominations ever in the pop-only categories, but we’re just going to say it: she deserved more.

Fashion is decidedly having a sparkle-happy moment, and Kim Kardashian took it to its logical extreme by covering her naked body in glitter for the latest campaign for her KKW Beauty line. She didn’t even need that crystal mesh Gucci bodysuit this time, she just put it directly on her skin. As it turns out, however, there’s a movement to ban cosmetic glitter. Apparently, it can be bad for the environment. Remember how a few years ago you found out that all those microbeads in your shower scrub were actually killing fish when they went down the drain? Yeah, it’s basically like that. Glitter particles are actually “microplastics” that can end up looking delicious but ultimately unhealthy to marine life. We always knew all that glitters is not gold, but we didn’t think it was actually hurting anything.
