James Bond Meets Jackie Chan

It’s a total grab bag of a weekend at the movies, with two dramas leading the way with the best critical appraisal. There’s the sexy story behind the creation of the Wonder Woman character, Professor Marston & the Wonder Women, which has a polyamorous threesome relationship at its center. Marshall finds Chadwick Boseman as a young Thurgood Marshall, our first African-American Supreme Court justice. On the less serious side, there’s Happy Death Day, which is, yes, basically the idea of Groundhog Day used in service of a slasher film (the main character relives the day she’s murdered over and over again). We want to like The Foreigner in theory. It’s an action thriller that teams up Jackie Chan and James Bond emeritus Pierce Brosnan with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell, but the reviews are lukewarm. It seems to serve to only remind us that men over 60 still have no trouble getting lead parts in youth-skewing genres in Hollywood.

Like so many other weekends, Netflix dominates the small screen. Of course, the streaming service’s ascent began five years ago with the David Fincher-directed and produced House of Cards. Now the director returns as the creative force behind Mindhunter, a series that finds Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany as two FBI agents in the late ‘70s trying to figure out what makes serial killers tick (watch the trailer here). The service also premieres the second film it took at the Cannes Film Festival this year, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). It features Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, and (surprisingly) the best Adam Sandler performance in years. (The service also has a Bella Thorne-starring horror movie called The Babysitter this weekend, but whatever). Elsewhere, Showtime premieres White Famous on Sunday at 10 p.m. SNL alum Jay Pharoah plays a character loosely based on a young Jamie Foxx, but critics aren’t too impressed. HBO, meanwhile, continues to be in the business of Lena Dunham. Saturday at 10 p.m. it premieres her latest short film, Tokyo Project, which stars Elisabeth Moss.

The AMAs

The American Music Awards only exist because ABC lost the rights to air the Grammys back in the ‘70s, and we’ve lived with them ever since. They may not be the most prestigious trophy in music, but representation still matters. So it’s curious indeed that the AMAs rolled out their nominees list on Thursday with shockingly few women among them. Literally, only three solo female acts and one female-fronted band were nominated in non-gendered categories. The AMAs says it bases its nominations on some objective, like still-secret calculations involving streams, fan interactions, social media, sales and other metrics, but the male-dominated results didn’t please many. “So many incredible female artists have released this year. Hoping the coming award shows give them the credit that is due to them,” wrote singer Halsey on Twitter. Anyway, the AMAs will now assuredly have one the most boring red carpets of the years.
