In: Riverdale’s Return | Out: The New Dynasty’s Lack of Camp

The new Dynasty is quite as campy as the original (which was on the air the last time Oprah went to a bank).

Everyone’s new favorite sexy teen show, Riverdale, returns tonight at 8 p.m. on the CW, but right after it, the producers of everyone’s old favorite sexy teens shows (The O.C. and Gossip Girl) return with their take on a notoriously sexy ‘80s guilty pleasure: Dynasty. Yes, the show best remembered for its catfights and the only TV wedding that was even more shocking and bloody than any Game of Thrones nuptials has been rebooted for a new audience. It’s set in Atlanta this time. The character of “Krystal” is now “Cristal.” Her brother, Steven, is now totally and openly gay (as opposed to the original, who was only occasionally secretly gay). The cast is now noticeably more diverse. Unfortunately, critics aren’t wowed. What’s missing? The camp! The trash! The extravagance! Even the wardrobes are lacking (which is weird, because so many recent designer collections do look downright Dynasty). “This Dynasty’s seriousness of intent is not balanced by enough wit and canny character development, nor is it offset by consistent injections of flair or fabulousness,” is how Variety boils it down. Of course, no one cared about the original until season two when Joan Collin’s character, Alexis, was introduced. Likewise, the new one has yet to cast their Alexis. If only out of curiosity, we hope it lasts long enough to do so (Who could it be? Elizabeth Hurley? A suddenly free Kim Cattrall? A much-too-young-but-who-cares Lindsay Lohan?) Maybe in the meantime the show will find its footing...and get some Gucci or YSL in the wardrobe.

The other shoe has dropped in the Harvey Weinstein saga, and with it, hopefully, the floodgates for those in the entertainment industry to talk openly about the issues of sexual abuse. On Tuesday, The New Yorker posted its in-depth investigation conducted by Ronan Farrow. In it, actresses Mira Sorvino, Rosanna Arquette, and Asia Argento come forward with their stories. Since then, others including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Heather Graham have also shared that they were victims of Weinstein. Several had remained quiet until now because Weinstein had a reputation for ruining careers and reputations of anyone who crossed him. Look at how Weinstein-friendly tabloids treated model Ambra Gutierrez after she went to the police when he groped her in 2015. Now, however, the secrets are out in the open, and it’s unlikely that Weinstein will be the last to fall.

In palette-cleansing lighter news, can we talk about how Oprah recently decided to go to the bank just because she realized she hadn’t been there in decades? Seriously, the talk show mogul realized she hadn’t been to a normal bank since 1988. She shared the revelation in a recent sit-down with Ellen DeGeneres (who actually couldn’t remember the last time she went to a bank either). “Yeah, I just wanted to go there just to do it. I stood in line, just to do it,” said Oprah. “It felt fantastic.” However, both talk show hosts admitted that they couldn’t actually remember what their ATM pin numbers were. When you’re that rich, do you just keep stacks of cash lying around at home...or do you have someone who goes to the ATM for you?
