Workplace dramas are hard to pull off, but when they’re successful they can be thrilling. Of course, in the ‘80s and ‘90s the preferred setting for professional dramas were Wall Street boardrooms or high pressure sales offices. But that seems so dated now. It only makes sense then that Hollywood is increasingly looking to Silicon Valley for era-defining professional drama. There was The Social Network and Steve Jobs. Jennifer Lawrence is already set to play controversial Theranos chief executive Elizabeth Holmes in a planned project. Now Uber is getting the movie treatment. Hidden Figures screenwriter Allison Schroeder is at work on a script about the company’s culture of rampant (and spectacularly dumb) sexism based on whistleblower Susan Fowler’s personal blog post. It’s said to be mixture of The Social Network and Erin Brockovich, although we could certainly see it borrowing a little bit from 9 to 5 and Office Space.

Finally, A Great Film About Fashion?

Daniel Day-Lewis’s Acting Career, Now

Speaking of movies about particularly dramatic industries, Hollywood hasn’t really produced that many great films about the fashion industry when you take documentaries out of the discussion. Yes, obviously, there’s The Devil Wears Prada. Maybe you can count Blow Up. Europe has produced a few serviceable biographical films about designers, but they’re not exactly classics. It’s not like we’ve had that many fashion films competing for Oscars, you know. Perhaps it might be the surprising duo of Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis who change that. Shrouded in secrecy for months, we finally got a first look at the pair’s upcoming flick Phantom Thread (which is supposedly Day-Lewis’s last movie ever). Despite reports he’d be playing a real life designer, Day-Lewis plays a fictional English couturier who wants everything in his life just so until one day he meets a young waitress who becomes his lover and muse. As it turns out, she doesn’t quite live up to his “just so” demands. Of course, we’re still not sure exactly what to expect, but you can watch the first trailer for yourself here. Though, it certainly seems like Day-Lewis’s character might be the most intriguing and complicated onscreen fashion maven since a certain Miranda Priestly.

It seems like everyone in the British Royal Family really has it together right now. We mean, when was the last time they went this long without a scandal? Prince William is a father of two. Prince Harry is on the brink of an engagement. People don’t even mind Camilla Parker Bowles anymore! Not even some random cousin is up to much trouble. So in this sea of royally good behavior it makes sense then that original bad girl princess, Margaret, is having a surprising viral movement more than 15 years after she passed. Queen Elizabeth’s little sister’s daily schedule from 1955 was leaked, and the internet is eating it up. It involves two hours of chain smoking in bed while flipping through newspapers, an hour-long midday bath, a 12:30 p.m. “vodka pick-me-up” and then a four course lunch with her mum, the Queen Mother, that involved a split bottle of wine. Mind you, this only includes her routine through the early afternoon. Who knows what she got into during the rest of the day.
