Well, as expected, Jigsaw, the latest in the never-ending torture porn series Saw (and first in seven years), pulled through to number one at the box office this weekend with a little over $16 million. Though it wasn’t exactly a triumph. These flicks used to do at least an easy $30 million on opening weekend, but demand for a reboot was mild. Still, it was the only new release that made any noise this weekend. Thank You for Your Service pulled up just north of $3 million despite good reviews, while George Clooney’s Suburbicon, once pegged as a possible awards season player, floundered south of $3 million. This weekend also delivered a bit of karmic box office news. Amityville: The Awakening was filmed all the way back in 2014 but was held back multiple times due to various problems. It was actually available to stream for free earlier this month, but was plopped out into 10 theaters this weekend where it made all of $742. You’re reading that right. Just three figures, or about the price of a pair of Balenciaga Speed Trainers. The karmic part? The film was co-produced by The Weinstein Company’s Dimension label.

Our current cultural obsession with horror may be a reaction to our political reality, but it seemed like politically-themed Halloween costumes were decidedly out this year. At least that’s the impression we got from not only going out, but scrolling through social media, clicking through way too many galleries, and reading celebrity costume round-ups while nursing a hangover (what, you didn’t?). The supermodel-filled party that was the Natalia Vodianova–hosted Fabulous Fund Fair bash in New York included Karlie Kloss as Marilyn Monroe, Naomi Campbell as a sun goddess, and Paris Hilton as a harem girl. Parties at New York’s Top of the Standard and the Blond included plenty of French courtesans, Stranger Things references, and some gender-bending princesses. In celebrity land, Kaia Gerber went as a ‘70s glamazon, Nicki Minaj was a Malibu Barbie, and Kim Kardashian went as three different legendary pop divas, including Madonna at the 1991 Oscars. Find the best celeb costumes here. Missing, you’ll notice, is anyone in a bad blonde wig and orange makeup. Thankfully. We all needed a break.

Overtending the Grid

We’ve seen celebrities delete their accounts before. We’ve also seen them abandon their social media for months at a time. But what about deleting all the contents of the account but living it up otherwise? That’s what Dakota Johnson did. The once semi-active Instagram user has kept her 1.8 million followers on hold for months. There’s not a single image on it anymore. Heck, her parents Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson are more active on the platform than she is. What to make of it? Well, obviously it’s a power move. Celebs often get sick of the trolling they face on social media, but why delete your account entirely when you can just leave it up completely blank as a testament to how over it you are now?
