Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives in theaters as not just the movie of the weekend but rather the movie of the entire month of May, and you’ve likely known whether you’re going to see it as soon as you saw the first one (assuming you did) and the decent reviews shouldn’t cause anyone to change their mind. The flick is so zeitgeist-swallowing that no other studios are even bothering with trying to push another wide-release this weekend. There are some options in limited release though, but they’re all rather niche: The Weinstein Co. was better at driving up buzz around 3 Generations (starring Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon and Elle Fanning) than they were delivering good reviews. The Lovers, a comedy about an older couple that cheats on each other only to fall in love again, has fared better with critics, as has Risk, a much talked about documentary about Julian Assange from the same director as the Oscar-winning Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour. Netflix is providing more options (especially for those who don’t live in the land of limited releases) with a new season of Sense8 and an original movie Handsome: A Netflix Murder Mystery, a crime spoof starring Jeff Garlin and Natasha Lyonne.

A Movie About The Women Who Read 50 Shades of Grey

Actual 50 Shades of Grey Movies

Maybe it seemed like the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon was a brief moment in time. Maybe it seemed like a cultural spark that would amuse us all for about a year or so before we moved on. But, no, the book series’ influence shows no signs of slowing down. Of course, there’s still one more movie based on the original series to be released, and author E. L. James is still writing the books again from Christian Grey’s perspective. Now the phenomenon is getting meta. There’s a feature film in the works about the kind of women who read 50 Shades. Seriously. In fact, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Diane Keaton just signed on to star. It’s called Book Club, and it’s about high-minded women who decide to spice their otherwise serious book gathering with the smutty series and, somehow, have their lives changed forever. Fonda, Keaton and Bergen play 3/4ths of the lifelong friend group at the center of the flick with no word on who they’ll be joined by. Sounds like a job for Whoopi Goldberg, if we’re being honest.

Things That Make You Say “Duh”

Surprising News

MSNBC morning co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski were not only secretly dating but are now engaged? Duh. With the end of Game of Thrones in sight, HBO is now in the early stages of working on four separate spinoffs? Duh. They’re not going to let that cash cow die anytime soon. Miley Cyrus realized her twerked-out stoner persona was not going to sustain an entire career and is now rebranding as a weed-free country-tinged musician and highlighting her actual songwriting and singing ability? Duh. Beyoncé’s maternity style keeps killing? Duh. Museum donors don’t like spoiled scions smoking cigarettes in the Met bathroom? Duh. House Republicans rushed to pass a divisive and complicated health care bill without even waiting to get a Congressional Budget Office score even though it could lead to millions losing coverage and chillingly would let things like to rape, postpartum depression and domestic violence be considered “pre-existing conditions” just because those Congressmembers hate Obamacare so much? Very, very unfortunately, duh. They even reportedly celebrated with beer afterwards. The chances of that bill passing the Senate? Hopefully not so "duh."
