She’s spoken out fervently about Hollywood’s pay gap, and isn’t afraid to ask what she’s making in comparison to her male co-stars. Now, after serving on the official Jury at the Cannes Film Festival, she’s also speaking out about how women are portrayed on screen. Noting that she just watched about 20 films in 10 days, she said during the jury's last press cal, "The one thing I really took away from this experience is how the world views women, from the female characters that I saw represented, and it was quite disturbing to me, to be honest...I do hope that when we include more female storytellers, we will have more of the women that I recognize in our day-to-day life—ones that are proactive, [that] have their own agency, [that] don't just react to the men around them. They have their own point of view." A clip quickly made its way around the internet after director Ava DuVernay highlighted it on Twitter. | | | | | | | French brand Vetements is known for a lot of eccentricities, but none more so than it’s penchant for oversized clothing. You know the look: a hoodie that extends well past the waist and extra lengths of sleeve dangling below the hands. Designer Demna Gvasalia says the look is inspired by his humble upbringing in Georgia where people regularly bought clothes a few sizes too big for children so they could grow into them. He also now tells WWD that the brand is over it. “Eastern Europe is over me” he says, and will now move on to phase that is “more concentrated, more about product design” and less about the underground. One designer not moving on from his trademark quirks is Gucci’s Alessandro Michele. He doubled downed on his signatures at the brand’s Resort show in Florence over the weekend. That meant maximalism with lots of florals, animal-inspired detailing, and one, notable, apparently homage or rip-off (depending on who you talk to) to a famous ‘80s piece by Harlem designer Dapper Dan. | | | | Alanis Morissette: The Musical | Broadway will turn anything into a musical if they think they can and that people will actually buy to tickets to it. The latest example: a musical based on Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill will premiere in Massachusetts next summer, likely before making an eventual Broadway bow. It’s got two Tony winners working on it behind-the-scenes, and Juno writer Diablo Cody is handling the book. It won’t be a Morissette bio-musical, but rather will be about a modern multi-generational family that explores issues of race, gender and identity through the classic tunes of Morissette, which, sure. Of course, we couldn’t help but note we have a few more classic ‘90s albums we’d like to see turned into shows (No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom, Spice World and a Smashing Pumpkins double LP included), but there is one drawback: if they do keep turning ‘90s musicians’ stories into Broadway musicals, than what will be left over for Lifetime made-for-tv biopics? | | | | | | | | | | | Several items at the Gucci show made use of the alternative spelling “Guccy,” and it took place at an actual palace. Might it have been a bit of a shout-out out to this obscure Gucci fan account? Maybe. Michele follows it, and, if not, well, the obsessively devoted account is worth at least a scroll anyway. | | | | | | | | Azealia Banks, 26 (Twitter Meme) Phillipa Soo, 27 (Hamilton Alum) Colin Farrell, 41 (Actually, Quite a Respected Actor Now) Brooke Shields, 52 (The Original Calvin Girl) Clint Eastwood, 87 (Enemy of Empty Chairs Everywhere) | | | | | | |
