It’s pirates versus lifeguards at the box office this weekend, while Netflix makes a cutthroat move.

Lifeguards and Pirates

Land Lovers

It’s a battle of the would-be blockbusters at the box office this weekend as the lifeguards of Baywatch head off against those Pirates of the Caribbean. While Baywatch seems to have all the buzz, the beloved Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in Ryan Lochte-style speedo, analysts expect Caribbean to take a commanding lead in ticket sales. This despite the fact that franchise star Johnny Depp has been caught in a downward spiral of never ending bad publicity over the past few years. Why? Simply because people love these damn pirate movies. Though, it’s best to take things into perspective. Pirates is on track to gross lower than the other recent flicks in the series, and Baywatch is expected to do pretty damn good compared to other broad comedies based on nostalgia-inducing TV shows. The one thing that the two movies do share? Bad reviews. As of right now they both share a dismal rating of 39 on review aggregating site Metacritic. Looking for an alternative? Well, there isn’t much new in the indie theaters, but the Brad Pitt-starring War Machine premieres on Netflix (the same place you can also catch the last season of Bloodline this weekend).

Those ‘70s Shows

Speaking of Netflix, the service made its most ruthless TV show cancellation yet by ending The Get Down after a single season. It’s a change from how Netflix usually does business. They previously gave shows at least more than one season to try and find their groove and an audience. They even let forgettable shows like Marco Polo and Hemlock Grove get multiple seasons. The fact it happened to The Get Down is all the more surprising, considering it was the brainchild of director Baz Luhrman and one of Netflix’s more expensive productions. Though, allegedly, production difficulties also played as much of a role as low viewership. Still, the show faces the same one-and-done fate as another ambitious show about music in the ‘70s: HBO’s Vinyl. Here’s hoping Showtime’s upcoming ‘70s set drama I’m Dying Up Here (though, this one about standup comedy) does better.

Blake Lively’s Time For a Gossip Girl Universe

Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s novels don’t necessarily all take place in some shared universe, but we’d like to pretend they do, especially as more of her work is adapted for screen. Following the success of the HBO limited series, another of her books, The Husband's Secret, is becoming a film, this time starring Blake Lively. As the title suggest, Lively plays a woman whose husband is harboring a secret so severe it means her entire life is built on a lie. Sounds fun! It’s not the only Moriarty book in Hollywood’s view. Lies star Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon also bought the rights to her book Truly Madly Guilty. As for Lively, she remains quite busy, and doesn’t seem to have time for that Gossip Girl reunion she says she’s open to. Which is fine, as her old co-star Ed Westwick recently said he’ll have no part of a reunion, despite not being quite as busy as Lively is.
