In: Melania Trump’s Power? | Out: Cannes Dress Codes

What is Melania’s relationship with the Prez really like? Who knows, but we do know blue jeans are big at Cannes.

Breaking the Dress Code Rules at Cannes

Being Proper

The red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival has a notoriously strict dress code, and attendees for screenings at night are expected to show up dressed to the nines. In fact, in 2015 there were reports that women were being turned away for daring to wear flats instead of high heels. The festival denied the rumors, but it seems like ever since women, especially famous ones, have been pushing against the prim and proper expectations. Kristen Stewart showed up at one screening this year in a midriff-baring Chanel number and noted the change of the times. “People get very upset at you if you don’t wear heels, but I feel that you can’t ask people that anymore. It’s just a given. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you can’t ask me either,” she told the Hollywood Reporter. "Even four years ago, it was not even a question: you have to wear a dress ...But now, it’s awesome. You can’t do that anymore!” Other celebs are taking it even further. French film goddess Marion Cotillard showed up in blue jeans on the red carpet a few days ago, and Isabelle Huppert showed up at a photocall in jeans as well. Then there’s the case of Kendall Jenner, who wore something we might call half-a-ballgown with jorts to Naomi Campbell’s Fashion For Relief party.

Melania Trump Conspiracy Theories

Well, well, well, look who’s doing great in the ratings? President Donald Trump’s least favorite cable network MSNBC. Last week, the left-leaning channel was the top news network in primetime all week for the first time ever. It especially dominated in the coveted 25-54 demographic, and amongst that crowd, Fox News was third for the entire week (it’s longest stretch there in 17 years). Turns out Fox’s recent tendency to ignore or distract from some of the biggest news stories of the day isn’t a very good strategy for a news network at all. Though, maybe we’re more interested in what Melania Trump is watching on cable news. Despite the internet seeming to think she hates her husband, a new Politico report suggests that she spends most of her days watching cable news and surfing through media reports about her husband’s administration and then reports them to the president at night. She’s also reportedly urging Trump to fire Sean Spicer. Turns out Mrs. Trump may have more power than anyone thought.

Another Cinematic Universe, This Time With Monsters

Ideas

Hollywood’s obsession with creating cinematic universes continues unbound, and on Monday Universal gave the world its first big taste of exactly what to expect out of interconnected web of movies based on classic cinema monsters. They’ve gone ahead and dubbed it “The Dark Universe,” and it’ll officially kick off next month with the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy reboot. Johnny Depp is onboard to play the Invisible Man, Russell Crowe is Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde and Javier Bardem is Frankenstein’s Monster. Interestingly though, the next movie Universal will release is the Bride of Frankenstein. Casting however isn’t finalized (did anyone call Angelina? Did she already say no?), but they’ve signed on director Bill Condon, most recently of Beauty and the Beast, to helm the flick. He also once directed the acclaimed indie Gods & Monsters, about James Whale, the director of the original Frankenstein movie with Boris Karloff.

Rihanna
@BadGirlRiri

Rihanna is in Cannes living it up, and she might have more film premiere red carpet moments in her future. Indeed, Netflix is reportedly putting into production a movie that will bring together the singer, actress Lupita Nyong’o, director Ava DuVernay and screenwriter Issa Rae. How’d it happen? Well, it all started with a Twitter meme.
