Neither was an outright financially disaster (and Pirates, at least, is doing quite well overseas), but neither met expectations. Why? Well Deadline points out a few reasons (“franchise fatigue” among them), but points to the fact that both films were savaged by critics and racked up decidedly unfresh Rotten Tomatoes scores. In fact, there’s some chatter that Hollywood might get more aggressive about holding back films from critics, particularly with the kind of films that aren’t meant for them (as neither of these were). | The Festival, For Another Year | The Cannes Film Festival wrapped up over the weekend. It may have been the fest’s 70th anniversary, but no one thought it was the fest’s finest installment, quality-wise. Indeed, no film really broke through as the fest’s bona fide favorite, and prognosticators really had no idea who the jury would honor with awards. Just about not one predicted that The Square, a Swedish satire of the modern art world which counts Elisabeth Moss among its cast, to take home the Palme d’Or. 120 Beats per Minute, a French film about ‘90s AIDS activists, was some more widely expected to take home the top prize but had to settle for the Grand Prix, the runner-up award. Sofia Coppola took home the award for best director for The Beguiled, making her only the second woman after Jane Campion to snatch the trophy. Meanwhile, the acting awards went to two stars whose flicks screened late in the schedule: Joaquin Phoenix for You Were Never Really Here and Diane Kruger for In The Fade (the first time the German-born model-turned-actress actually acted in a German-language film). Perhaps you’re thinking, wait, wasn’t this Nicole Kidman’s year? Don’t worry, that fact was well reflected in the awards. She starred in Coppola’s The Beguiled, and her other in competition film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, took home best screenplay for director Yorgos Lanthimos. Kidman herself was awarded with a special 70th Anniversary prize. | | | | Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift’s Friendship | Who would have ever thought Andy Cohen would end up being one of greatest celebrity interviewers? The guy just has a way of getting A-Listers to blurt out things they otherwise wouldn’t when they sit down in his Watch What Happens Live clubhouse, and Kim Kardashian is no exception. She explained why she, at least, parted ways with longtime stylist Monica Rose a few years back (Kanye hired her a new glam team), revealed that she doesn’t talk to Taylor Swift anymore (imagine that!), and admitted that she didn’t really think through her marriage with Kris Humphries. “I just thought, ‘Holy s---, I’m 30 years old, I better get this together. I better get married,” she said. “I think, like, a lot of girls do go through that where they freak out thinking they’re getting old and have they to figure it out, all their friends are having kids. And so it was more of that situation. But I knew, like, [during the] honeymoon it wasn’t gonna work out.” She also shed a little light on her husband’s apparent fondness for Donald Trump. "You know, we have different opinions, and Kanye's opinions, I don't want to speak on what his opinions are, but they're evolving," | | | | | | | | | | | Miranda Kerr wasn’t the only celeb to get hitched over the weekend. Shameless star Emmy Rossum married Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail in Manhattan. Her gown? Custom Carolina Herrera, of course. | | | | | | | | Will Peltz, 31 (Actor Still Successfully Playing Teens) Remy Ma, 36 (Frequent Nicki Minaj Song Subject) Idina Menzel, 46 (Broadway Queen) | | | | | | |
