Our correspondent Miriam Bale notes that some of the most buzzed about films either star women or are directed by them, and in some cases both. Notably, Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, which stars Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst, is getting particularly rave reviews (and some are buzzing it could be a contender for the fest’s top prize). Kidman also used the buzz to make both a public and personal plea on behalf of female film directors. During a press conference she pulled out the stat that only 4.2 percent of major films in 2016 were directed by women and noted, “Hopefully it will change over time, but people keep saying, 'Oh it's so different now', but it isn't - listen to that.” She also told an Australian newspaper that she now plans to work with a female director at least once every 18 months. May more actresses take a similar stance, and, perhaps more importantly, more A-List male stars as well. | | | | Stefano Gabbana’s Love for Melania | | | | President Donald Trump and family’s first overseas trip has inspired its fair share of memes and the internet fun seemed to peak yesterday when the Trumps met with Pope Francis. One photo in particular of the pontiff looking less than pleased particularly set the internet on fire (though, Melania and Ivanka Trump’s particularly severe all-black ensembles during the meeting also offered a side dish of fascination to the situation on their own). Though, there’s at least one notable person on social media who isn’t using the Trump’s trip as a source of “LOLs,” and that’s Stefano Gabbana, one half of Dolce & Gabbana of course. The Italian has been one of the few designers anywhere on earth who has been publically pleased with Melania wearing his clothes, and the first lady has been wearing tons and tons of D&G lately. Each time Gabbana has posted the looks with glowing “thank yous” and hashtagging them with #DGWoman. This has caused some blowback, but the designer seems to welcome it. “THANK YOU ❤ Haters!!!! Remember #boycottdolcegabbana please,” he wrote under one photo of Trump. | | | | | | | Netflix does not play around, folks. Whenever they come to play, they play big. We all already know that they churn out buzzy, awards-worthy television on the regular, and they’re increasingly chasing feature film prestige (they have two films at Cannes after all). They’re also pretty much now the default destination for stand-up comedy specials from the big names. Everyone from Chris Rock to Jerry Seinfeld to Amy Schumer has done a special for the service or has one in the works. Now they’ve even managed to coax Ellen DeGeneres back in the game. The announcement was made on Twitter when Netflix’s account tweeted, “Looks like it's been 15 years since you did a stand-up special, @TheEllenShow. How about one for Netflix?” “Let me think about it. Ok I'm in,” Degeneres quickly tweeted back. Soon the question won’t be “How many blue chip stand up comedians have done specials for Netflix,” but rather, “Are you really a blue chip standup if you haven’t done a special for Netflix?” | | | | | | | | | | | Chinese popstar Chris Lee has created quite the buzz at Cannes with her daring red carpet looks (here she previewed a Margiela outfit she later wore to a screening), but her Instagram will keep you updated on her fashion choices year-long. | | | | | | | | Cillian Murphy, 41 (Pair of Irish Cheekbones) Molly Sims, 44 (America’s Heidi Klum) Octavia Spencer, 47 (Has a Great Pie Recipe) Stacy London, 48 (Televised Fashionista) Eve Ensler, 64 (Her Vagina is Very Famous) Ian McKellen, 78 (Patrick Stewart’s Work Spouse) | | | | | | |
