Kirsten Dunst, Queen of Candidness

Hating on Kiki

While half the world wasn’t looking, Kirsten Dunst quietly morphed from teen movie queen into one of our more fearless and adventurous actresses. She’s also developed a reputation for being charmingly candid in interviews. Remember, this is the woman who just casually let word slip in 2008 that Johnny Depp had someone feed him lines via an earpiece almost a decade before it became a mini-scandal. As she gears up to promote her latest Sofia Coppola collaboration The Beguiled at Cannes, she’s revealing a few more little gems, as well. Of Sony’s decisions to keep rebooting the Spider-Man franchise she tells Variety, “I don’t care ...Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C’mon, am I right or what? Listen, I’d rather be in the first ones than the new ones.” She also fessed up to being blunt with Coppola about her refusal to drop any weight for the film because she hates working out, and because of the limited food options open to her in the film’s rural Louisiana filming location. “I’m eating fried chicken and McDonald’s before work. So I’m like, ‘We have no options! I’m sorry I can’t lose weight for this role.’” We can only hope the rest of her press tour for the film is as delightful.

Even More TV Musicals

Actually Going to the Theater

Thought live musicals on network television was just a passing fad? Think again. Despite some diminishing returns in the ratings departments, the broadcast networks are still very much banking on the genre. Indeed, Fox just announced two more. They’ll air a musical version of holiday classic A Christmas Story in December, and will follow that up with Rent in 2018 (notable because while other networks prefer more family friendly shows, Fox isn’t afraid to bet on more mature musicals like it previously did with Rocky Horror). Meanwhile, NBC just committed to Jesus Christ Superstar for next Easter. Incidentally, all three will be produced by Marc Platt who was the force behind Fox’s recent Grease: Live! Of course, the previously Jennifer Lopez-starring Bye Bye Birdie is on track for December on NBC. Meanwhile, ABC is getting into the game with an adaptation of parent company Disney’s The Little Mermaid Broadway show for October. Before all of that though, ABC will air a taped version of Dirty Dancing on May 24th. So it looks like the only way the networks will stop producing these is when they run out of source material.

Your Hopes for A Friends Reunion, Still

Musicals aren’t the only source material TV networks keep mining for big events. They’re also mining their old sitcoms as well. The trailer for the limited series revival of Will & Grace arrived on Monday, and then just one day later, ABC announced that it was indeed bringing back Roseanne. It’ll air for eight episodes, likely next spring, and almost the entire cast will be back. That even includes both Beckies. Original ‘Becky’ Lecy Goranson will play Becky, while second ‘Becky’ Sarah Chalke will play another undisclosed role. It makes you wonder what classic sitcom is next. Does Frasier host a podcast now? Did the character of Just Shoot Me! successfully adapt Blush magazine to digital? Is The Nanny, now officially a millionaire theater producer’s wife, a street style star about Manhattan? There’s so many possibilities. Though, don’t hold your breath for a Friends revival anytime soon despite the trend. A recent rumor that one was on the way was shot down.

Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing is taking a detour from dressing Kardashians to dressing ballerinas. The Instagram-obsessed designer took to the social media network yesterday to announce that he’s designing costumes for a new ballet in conjunction with choreographer Sebastian Bertaud and the Paris Opera.
