The top five at the box office were pretty much more of the same (congratulations to Coco for its third week at number one), with one notable exception. After expanding to a little over 800 screens this weekend, James Franco’s The Disaster Artist rocketed into fourth place with a weekend take of $6.4 million. Not bad for a $10 million picture based on bizzaro cult film The Room, not bad at all. When it comes to possible Oscar nominations, The Disaster Artist is on the bubble in a still wide-open year. Though, a continued strong commercial performance certainly should help its chances, especially in the best actor (yes, for Franco) and adapted screenplay categories. Elsewhere, Thor: Ragnarok became the 10th Marvel movie to officially cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office. The only new wide-release movie this weekend turned out to be a bomb. The Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman–starring Just Getting Started, well, never did. It flopped with a $3 million opening. Distributors had hoped it would be a slow-burn success by attracting older audiences throughout its run, but the film won’t be the talk of the active retirement community. Audiences gave it a paltry “C” CinemaScore.

Art Basel Miami Beach, America’s most important art fair and premier free champagne distribution site, wrapped up over the weekend. So what happened at the first Basel of the Donald Trump presidency? Well, artist and designer Tara Subkoff staged a performance piece starring Selma Blair and 14 other women as a reaction to the wave of sexual harassment revelations in Hollywood. An artist projected “Impeach Trump” onto the side of a historic Art Deco hotel. Fair., an art fair that featured only women artists, had its first year, and, in a twist, didn’t actually have anything for sale. Otherwise, though, it was Basel as usual. Virgil Abloh DJ’ed so many parties he lost count. Drake and Cardi B threw concerts for the glitterati. Paris Hilton was there. The Last Jedi
The Dark Side
Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiered over the weekend, and, perhaps because we all still live with some of the trauma from the prequels, there might have been fears that it wouldn’t live up the hype. Worry not, the initial response on Twitter from critics was almost overwhelming positive. Entertainment Weekly writer Anthony Breznican wrote it “will shatter you—and then make you whole again.” ABC News correspondent Clayton Sandell wrote it’s the “most epic, emotionally powerful @starwars film ever,” and warned everyone to stay as far away from spoilers for as long as they can. Even Mark Hamill supposedly gives the best performance of his career in the film. Of course, we’ll all have to wait until the official release date of December 15, but, in the meantime, you can swoon over the gorgeous dress Lupita Nyong’o wore on the red carpet.
Ricky Martin, on-and-off Miami resident, seemed to be everywhere at Art Basel this year. He is, of course, betrothed to artist Jwan Yosef after all. Got to support you man. Find more highlights from Martin’s thirst trap–heavy feed here.
