Is there anyone left out there who needs a reminder that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has hit theaters as of midnight last night? Disney probably didn’t even need to do any marketing for the film, because critics are basically doing it for them with effusive reviews. Many are calling it the best Star Wars movies in years, and truly, there’s a lot to anticipate: the real return of Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher’s last performance, Porgs, Laura Dern. The only wide-release movie going up against it is Ferdinand, a CGI cartoon about a Spanish fighting bull (voiced by WWE superstar John Cena). While the film scored two Golden Globe nominations, critics are decidedly mixed in their reviews. On the streaming services this weekend, you get two oddball but intriguing series. Netflix has Wormwood, a not-quite-documentary series from famed documentary director Errol Morris that follows a real-life CIA mystery, but includes dramatizations played by actors like Peter Sarsgaard. View the trailer here. Meanwhile, Amazon has a satire series named Jean-Claude Van Johnson starring Jean-Claude Van Damme named Jean-Claude Van Johnson, who is also secretly a spy. The reviews aren’t great, but they’re not bad either, which is to say if that description somehow grabs you, we won’t judge you for checking it out.

Fox as You Knew It
The world learned Thursday that it is now down from six major Hollywood studios to just five. The Walt Disney Company will buy most of 21st Century Fox for a reported $52.4 billion. The actual Fox network and channels like Fox News will be spun off into a new company, but otherwise, Disney gets its film studios, some cable channels like FX, and the rights to Fox-produced content (which will beef up the library of the long-rumored Disney streaming service). This also means a bunch of weird things, like the fact that the X-Men and Avengers can finally team-up on screen, that Anastasia is now technically a Disney princess (kind of), and that Star Wars and Avatar now have the same owner. Though, it also means that media consolidation has now hit a peak, and there’s really no other company left in Hollywood that can even match Disney’s might. It could lead to some cool superhero movies and a great streaming service, but there’s sure to be some monopoly concerns in the long run.

The Golden Globes’s biggest red carpet trend has already been leaked: it may be an all-black fashion affair. According to numerous reports, nominees like Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep, and Emma Stone are planning to band together to impose a symbolic black dress code to show solidarity with the victims of sexual harassment and abuse at the Globes, and the movement could stay further into awards season. Stars have used the red carpet to send messages before via ribbons and pins, but this would be the first time the statement spanned from head to toe.
Daughter of comedy superproducer Judd Apatow and actress Leslie Mann, Maude Apatow, who turns 20 today, is already following in the family business with a hilarious Twitter feed and a burgeoning acting career. She’ll next appear in Assassination Nation alongside the likes of Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Bella Thorne, and Bill Skarsgård.
