Leaving Stones Unturned

With every title of your VHS collection from the ’90s being turned into a musical (Groundhog Day, Death Becomes Her, etc.), and with every major singer being given a bio-musical (Gloria Estefan, Cher, Donna Summer, etc.), someone on Broadway realized that no one has ever done a Princess Diana musical. So now someone is trying. Literally, that’s how it happened. “I thought it was a great idea for a musical, I asked around to see if anyone was doing it—no one was—so David [Bryan] and I just jumped into it,” said writer Joe DiPietro. Titled Diana, the musical will chronicle the princess’s marriage and the period directly following it. The four main characters are Diana, Charles, and, perhaps controversially, Camilla Parker Bowles and Queen Elizabeth II. Music will draw from both classic pop and rock hits of the ’80s. With a bunch of Tony-winning creatives behind it, the show will premiere in San Diego sometime next year, and, if it proves successful, it will almost certainly head to Broadway. We’re still not sure how someone will be able to accurately capture the spirit of Queen Elizabeth while belting out big show tunes (seriously, can you imagine the real one singing?), but here’s hoping the project proves worthwhile.

Raf Simons’s Calvin Klein

The Old CK

The biggest story in American fashion this year was undoubtedly the arrival of Raf Simons at Calvin Klein. The Belgian master of minimalism, Hypebeast god, and former creative director of Dior came to put his stamp on our homegrown mass-market brand and we greeted him like a conquering hero. While Simons mostly spent his first year concentrating on CK’s upmarket lines, including the newly renamed 205W39NYC runway collection and the new demi-couture collection By Appointment, in 2018 the American masses will actually be able to get their hands on some CK clothes featuring his point of view—without having to fork over thousands of dollars. GQ has the exclusive on his first men’s collection for Calvin Klein Jeans, and it reports that “the house’s mass-market sub-labels [will] begin rolling out goods that riff on his new CK aesthetic.” Indeed, judging from the men’s stuff, there is a direct stylistic link to the stuff that will be carried in your local department store and the stuff he sends down the ready-to-wear runway. We can only expect the same of the women’s.

Catt Sadler

The Wage Gap

Celebrity journalists and actual celebrities are not necessarily always on the same page. After all, one’s job is often to ask the other probing personal questions. Yet they can come together in the face of inequality. E! News host Catt Sadler made headlines on Wednesday when she announced that she’d left the network after finding out she made about half the salary of male co-host Jason Kennedy. “My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were denied repeatedly,” she wrote on her website. So she quit. Two of Hollywood’s biggest leading ladies offered her some unexpected support online. “WOW this is so disappointing,” tweeted Jessica Chastain. “When are companies like @e_entertainment going to understand that women should be paid fairly. 1/2 of her male counterpart is not appropriate.” Jennifer Lawrence took to Facebook to add, “Thank you Catt for sharing your story.” Sadler herself expanded on her decision in an interview with People, “I’m a single mom of two kids. I’ve given my all to this network. I’ve sacrificed time away from my family and I have dedicated my entire career to this network. And when you learn something like that, it makes you feel very small and underappreciated and undervalued. It’s heartbreaking.”
