Golden Globes Snubs

We all politely ignore the shadier parts of the Golden Globes’s interesting history, for the sake of an occasionally fun show and a big televised ceremony to break up awards season. But Jada Pinkett Smith has something to say this year. After comedy hit Girls Trip and its breakout star Tiffany Haddish were snubbed by the Globes, Smith aired some dirty laundry. While studios can woo Globes voters through special screenings and press conferences (the Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association), Smith, in a series of tweets, claims the HFPA wouldn’t even set up screenings or press conferences for her film. So she’s not even sure how many members ultimately saw it. “Hollywood has systems in place. [It] must learn to expand its concepts of race, gender equality, and inclusion in regard to its perceptions of art across the board,” she wrote on Twitter. “Moments like this occur so that we have an opportunity to discuss, re-create, and regenerate old paradigms. It’s all about growth.” Smith has been known to alter awards season with her Twitter before. She was one of the most vocal celebrities to lift up the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag two years ago.

Men Missing the Person

A strange thing happened over the weekend. A short story went viral. No, not some Slender Man copypasta or a Twitter thread tale about a stripper in Florida but an actual literary short story that was published in The New Yorker. Plotwise, Kristen Roupenian’s “Cat Person” follows college student Margot as she engages in that exciting but often misleading practice of flirtation via text message, which ultimately leads to excruciatingly bad sex she didn’t really want to have in the first place and the uncomfortable aftermath. But it’s really about much more. It hits on all-too-common modern experiences that haven’t really been dealt with literarily before, and it drives it all home with an ending in which Margot (along with the reader) figures out what kind of man she’s been dealing with all along. It’s spawned dozens of think pieces. Both men and women have come forward with their own stories of “cat person-ing” (yes, it’s a verb now, too). Naturally, it’s also caused some blowback. Among men, mostly. The Twitter account “Men React to Cat Person” briefly but succinctly chronicled all the men online on who completely missed the point of the story in the first place.

Luca Guadagnino’s Free Time

Perhaps it’s unfair to view all of Jennifer Lawrence’s indie film choices in light of whether or not she could be nominated for an Oscar for them, but if mother! is an indicator, well, it certainly hasn’t worked out that way. For one of her next movies, however, she’ll team up with the director of one of this year’s hottest awards movies: Call Me by Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino. The project is titled Burial Rites, and it is a fictional take on the real-life story of the last woman ever to face the death penalty in Iceland. Lawrence recently said she had no films lined up for the next two years, but it turns out she has something in the works now. Guadagnino, interestingly, is actually the superbusy one. He’s directing a remake of horror classic Suspiria with Chloë Grace Moretz and Dakota Johnson, and he has a Brazilian-set project with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams in the works as well.
