Cash Grabs

In a summer in which audiences are notably growing wary of so many sequels and franchises, how did War For the Planet of the Apes do? Well, pretty decently, if not spectacular. It took in over $56 million and first place on the heels of critical raves. Though, it’s still down from the previous title in the Apes franchise, it is better than movies like Cars 3, The Mummy and the latest Transformers and Alien titles. The takeaway? The series was always planned as a trilogy, so the film wasn’t just an excuse to squeeze more money out of a franchise, and that certainly seemed to help with quality, reviews and ticket sales, all things considered. In other box office news? The Big Sick rolled out nationwide and took in $7.6 million. Not bad for an indie rom-com, and certainly a bit better than the weekend’s other new movie Wish Upon. That low budget horror movie had a gross of $5.6 million.

Who?

Long-running British sci fi show Dr. Who is not something you’d usually read about in this space, but the series made history this weekend by announcing that the 13th person to play the titular character will be a woman. No, those rumors that Tilda Swinton would take the job turned out not to be true, but actress Jodie Whittaker is still worth getting excited about. "I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one," Whittaker told the BBC. A familiar face to Brits thanks to her work on titles like St. Trinians and Broadchurch, somethings tells us she may very well find worldwide fame and help the series find news fans. In other exciting casting news involving British icons: Rami Malek has signed on to play Freddie Mercury in a Queen biopic directed by Bryan Singer. Rounding out this weekend’s exciting casting news: Disney has found its live action Aladdin in young actor Mena Massoud. Prince Jasmine will be played by Naomi Scott, most recently of Power Rangers. Rumors that Will Smith will be playing the Genie were also confirmed.

Luxury Paper Clips?

  Out Text Logo

Office Depot

Last month, the internet went wild over the fact that Prada was selling $185 paper clip. Sure, it was actually a sterling silver money clip (and not that outrageously priced a designer sterling silver money clip in the first place), but the item quickly became a meme. It’s all part of wider trend. Fashion, at the moment, seems to take delight in turning mundane items into luxury (see: Balenciaga’s leather shopping bags), and the internet in turn takes delight in finding outrage in those items (see: the backlash to Balenciaga’s leather shopping bags). Well, fresh off putting his own spin on Ikea’s FRAKTA bag, Off-White designer Virgil Abloh is now releasing his own designer paper clip and it makes Prada’s version look relatively sensible in retrospect. Abloh teased the piece on Instagram. It appears to be all gold and is a collaboration with Jacob the Jewler. No word on whether it is meant as a money clip, but it is inscribed with the phrase “office supplies” in quotes.
