...But Nothing Else Released This Weekend is Technically “Out” Either

The movie theaters this weekend are sort of like whatever club SNL’s Stefon thinks is New York City’s hottest at the moment: “This place has everything.” Literally everything from actor Harry Styles to Shapeshifting Rihannas, and all of the films have their positives. Christopher Nolan’s latest film (and his first stab at the war genre) Dunkirk seems poised to leave the weekend as the year’s first near-guaranteed Oscars contender. Luc Besson’s Valerian, which stars Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan, has rubbed some critics the wrong way with its plot but is wowing everyone with its visionary visuals (i.e. it might be worth a movie ticket for the 3D alone)...and a particularly interesting Rihanna cameo. The big surprise of the weekend, however, might be the Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith-starring Girls Trip. Critics are raving, and it’s being dubbed the best comedy of the year so far. Clearly it succeeds where Scarlett Johansson’s Rough Night failed. On the select theater front, there’s also Landline, director Gillian Robespierre and star Jenny Slate’s second collaboration after their mutual breakthrough with Obvious Child. “When she gets drunk it is probably on one and a half glasses of sangria and she probably needs to lie down,” Slate recently told us of her character, an uptight woman realizing the life she had planned might not be what she wanted.

Netflix

You know who also would like to make sure you get out to a theater this weekend just on principle alone, whether or not you happen to see his movie? Christopher Nolan. The man just loves the idea of going to the cinema (indeed, much to the pleasure of film buffs, Dunkirk is being released in multiple formats-IMAX, 35mm, and the obscure 70mm format). It should be no surprise then that he also isn’t a big fan of Netflix, especially the service’s recent habit of acquiring traditional movies without plans to release them in many traditional cinemas. In fact, he’s been slamming Netflix pretty regularly lately. “They have this mindless policy of everything having to be simultaneously streamed and released,” he told Indiewire. “So they’re not even getting in the [theatrical] game, and I think they’re missing a huge opportunity.” During a screening he also said he almost never watches movies at home on Netflix either, preferring to use Blu-Ray instead. Asked if he’d ever partner with Netflix, he replied “Why would you?” Eh, well, Netflix doesn’t seem to be hurting. They have movies directed by Noah Baumbach, Martin Scorsese, and even Orson Welles on their future release docket.

Pinups

The Pirelli Calendar was once the world’s classiest source of sexy pinups, but in recent years has been reimagined as a fashion-tinged event. The 2018 edition may be the most glamorous yet. It includes both RuPaul and Naomi Campbell for crying out loud. Styled by W’s Edward Enninful, who is soon to become editor in chief of British Vogue, and shot by Tim Walker, the calendar reimagines the story of Alice in Wonderland but with an all-black cast. Ru is the queen of hearts, Lupita plays the Dormouse, model Slick Woods is the Mad Hatter while Adwoa Aboah is Tweedledom. Literal black Barbie Duckie Thot stars as Alice. Djimon Hounsou, Whoopi Goldberg, and P. Diddy also appear. “The story of Alice has been told so many times and in so many ways, but always with a white cast,” Walker told the New York Times. “There has never been a black Alice, so I wanted to push how fictional fantasy figures can be represented and explore evolving ideas of beauty.” Peep some behind the scenes photos here
