Mariah Carey, the Character

Mariah Carey, the Guest

As we all know, Mariah Carey is quite the character. Now someone will get to play that character on Starz. The premium cable channel is developing a drama series based on the singer's early life in conjunction with Carey and her longtime friend director Brett Ratner. According to Deadline, the series will be “set in 1986 New York City and chronicles the rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl, an aspiring singer-songwriter who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest selling female music artist of all time.” So, it’s not quite the Glitter prequel some may have hoped. Meanwhile, the real Carey is certainly still providing lots of drama and entertainment on her own—two separate videos of the star are currently making the viral rounds. The first shows her at a concert in Vegas in which she seems like she can’t be bothered to do dance moves. Another finds her making a surprise appearance on summer game show Beat Shazam, in which she accepts hugs and applause, sits down by a piano, does not actually perform, and then exits. According to some reports though, she may have actually filmed a performance. It just didn’t make it to air. Here’s hoping her TV show fares better.

Elsewhere, another little girl who grew up in New York to become a powerful icon is also getting her dramatic due. Yes, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is finally getting the biopic treatment and it’s been a long time coming. Dubbed On the Basis of Sex, the script about Ginsburg’s early days as a trailblazing a women’s rights attorney was first pegged as one of Hollywood’s best unproduced scripts in 2014 by the famed Blacklist. Soon after, Natalie Portman signed on to star with Marielle Heller set to direct. Both have since moved on from the project, and now Felicity Jones has nabbed the role. Mimi Leder, fresh off executive producing and directing many episodes of The Leftovers, is set to helm the flick. Jones actually does bare more than a passing resemblance to a young RBG. Here’s hoping the Birmingham, England-born actress gets the Justice’s Brooklyn accent down.

Leaving Things As They Are

Beauty and The Beast is still the highest grossing film of the year, and Disney is not showing any signs of slowing its factory belt of turning its classic animated films into high-gloss live action productions. Yes, the world now knows that they’ve found their new real life Aladdin and Princess Jasmine. They’ve also signed on a murderer's row of voice talent for their live-action remake of The Lion King. The first footage of Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins 2.0 is out. Oh, right, and there’s that sure-to-be-bizarre remake of Dumbo that will be helmed by Tim Burton and will reunite him with his Batman Returns stars Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton (Colin Farrell and Eva Green are also on board). Now comes news that they’ve snagged Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to pen new songs for their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid as well. Cruella De Vil, Peter Pan and Mulan flicks are also in the works. So, we’ll be getting a lot of these, all with A-List talent attached, for quite some time. Sadly though, no plans for a live-adaption version of The Rescuers: Down Under starring Louis C.K. and Sofia Vergara. Yet.
