War movies have been risky box office propositions for a long time now, but in a summer of so many blockbuster flops and disappointments audiences were ready for something else. The real surprise of the weekend? Girls Trip’s $30 million take. That’s the highest opening for a live-action comedy all year and the highest opening for an R-rated comedy since 2014’s 22 Jump Street. It’s even a bit higher than Bridesmaids, and if there’s any justice in the world scene-stealer Tiffany Haddish will have her own Melissa McCarthy-like breakout. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, meanwhile, flopped into 5th place with a take of about $17 million. Maybe it’s not too much of a surprise the movie (said to be the most expensive European film of all time) didn’t do too well in America. The good news for its backers though is that the film has yet to open in most major international markets. Perhaps it will find redemption there. Also of note: Wonder Woman has officially overtaken Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the second highest-grossing film of the year behind Beauty and the Beast, which is also led by a woman. So much for the theory women, and women's interest films, can't make mint at the American box office. Atomic Blonde, meanwhile, opens next Friday. | | | | Anyone Who Doubted Wonder Woman 2 | Comic-Con, the State of the Nerd Union, was this weekend and brought more TV & movie news that one can shake a lightsaber at, so we’re just going to briefly gloss over what we’re most excited about. First off, Cate Blanchett in character as the villainous Hela from the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok looks absolutely amazing, like some sort of haute couture space priestess (on stage she wore a Monse suit, natch). Brie Larson looks less couture but still appropriately heroic in costume as Captain Marvel. Wonder Woman 2 is officially happening, but duh. The full trailer for season 2 of Stranger Things was set to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” which was perfect. Meanwhile, a sneak peek at Westworld’s second season indicates that, yes, everything and everyone (including, somehow, a tiger) in the park is bloodied and tattered. Ezra Miller was dressed in anime cosplay at all times. Oh, and Marvel has signed on Michelle Pfeiffer to join their universe in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp. Her character, Janet Van Dyne, is well established in comics but really could be portrayed anyway in the films. You don’t cast the woman who wrote the rules of how to play a female villain/anti-hero in a superhero movie 25 years ago with her take on Catwoman without taking advantage of that, right? | | | | Prince George, Yeah We Said It | Prince George, who recently turned 4, is out there being everyone’s favorite adorable meme-starting royal, but, please, can we have some respect and devote at least a moment of our dumb internet attention to the actual monarch? Because the U.K. is all atwitter over the revelation of what might be Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite song. Apparently it’s ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.” BBC DJ Chris Evans said he heard from a friend who attended a private dinner party with the queen that a DJ was playing classic disco music, and when the ABBA song came on the Queen got up and danced. “I always try to dance when this song comes on, because I am the queen, and I like to dance,” she reportedly told another guest. Sure, take the tale’s authenticity with a grain of salt, but, divine, if true. | | | | | | | | | | | The most followed person on Instagram turned 25 over the weekend and celebrated it, apparently, but having all of her friends Instagram her. | | | | | | | | Mara Wilson, 30 (Yes, Matilda is 30 now) Anna Paquin, 35 (Second Youngest Oscar Winner Ever) Rose Byrne, 38 (Comedy’s Go-to Prude) Jennifer Lopez, 48 (Bow Down) Kristin Chenoweth, 49 (Broadway’s Own) Lynda Carter, 66 (OG Wonder Woman) | | | | | | |
