Gender

The VMA nominations are out and MTV is officially done with gender. After eliminating gender-based awards for its Film and Television Awards, they’ve also dropped the VMAs' long-running male and female divisions as well. The kids these days just aren’t very much into binaries. As for the nominees, Kendrick Lamar leads the pack with eight, while Katy Perry and The Weeknd notched five a piece. The Weeknd and Lamar will compete in the Video of the Year category without Perry, but will be joined by Bruno Mars, Alessia Cara and DJ Khaled (for his heavily Rihanna-assisted “Wild Thoughts” clip). The Moonmen (which are surprisingly on trend, see below) will be handed on August 27th.

Being Stuck on This Earth

As our illustrated columnist Marisa Acocella first noted shortly after the Fall 2017 shows, this season’s fashion is all about-surprise, surprise-space, and thus, unsurprisingly, many of the biggest fashion labels' ad campaigns are beyond this world. Gucci’s latest campaign is straight out of B-movie sci-fi camp, with models dressed as aliens and monsters. There’s even a mini-movie to go along with it all. Meanwhile, Cara Delevingne and Lily-Rose Depp star in Chanel’s far more minimalist campaign, but they are wearing sweaters emblazoned with astronauts. Fendi meanwhile floats Gigi and Kendall (as if they need last names at this point) among hovering hoops. Though, there are some more down-to-earth campaigns as well. Calvin Klein’s latest is set on the side of a highway in Anywhere, USA, and Stella McCartney’s ads were literally shot in a landfill.

European Art Films

Cannes may have more of the glamour and history, but its programming also veers more artsy and European. When big time Hollywood talents want to preview their more Oscar-friendly fare they increasingly turn to the Toronto International Film Festival. The just announced line-up will include films directed by both Angelina Jolie (First They Killed My Father) and George Clooney (Suburbicon). Jennifer Lawrence’s next film, the hotly anticipated but mysterious mother! will makes its debut (and we can all finally figure out what it’s actually about), as well Emma Stone’s tennis dramady Battle of the Sexes. Margot Robbie, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet, Idris Elba, Daniel Craig and Elle Fanning also all have starring vehicles in the fest. Yes, for a little while starting on September 7th, Canada will be the most glamorous place on earth.
