Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks’ Oscar Chances

Anyone Else’s Oscar Chances

Margot Robbie has a flair for playing bad girl. Breaking through as a man-stealing temptress in The Wolf of Wall Street, she then went on to be the best thing about Suicide Squad as the twisted Harley Queen. Those bad girl roles keep coming. She’s currently filming a Tonya Harding biopic, and just signed on to play Maid Marian of Robin Hood lore. In this version Robin Hood dies and Marion takes up his role as “steal from the rich to give to the poor” vigilante. Though, that’s not the biggest news out of Hollywood on Monday. That would be the fact that Steven Spielberg is enlisting Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep to make a movie about The Washington Post’s role in fighting to release the Pentagon Papers to the public during the Nixon administration. Given today’s political situation, it should make a particularly relevant tale. Of course, should the film wind up nabbing the power trio three more Oscar nominations to compliment the combined 32 individual nominations they already have, we would not be surprised at all.

Leather

The big news out of Stella McCartney’s latest collection is that the vegetarian designer has finally come across leather and suede substitutes that she feels are high-quality enough to work into her clothing. She’s termed the technical fabric “skin-free skin,” and at least judging from for the pictures they do seem convincing enough to double as the real thing. Interestingly though, McCartney’s collection included a lot of sartorial homages to the very particularly stylings of British aristocratic hunting dress. It also included at least one apparent shout out to Queen Elizabeth. The designer sent out a model in a silk headscarf and quilted overcoat reminiscent of the monarch’s go-to countryside downtime outfit. As we observed back in September, the Queen, once considered the pinnacle of dowd, seems to be having a fashion moment; even Gucci designer Alessandro Michele paid tribute to her in a British-themed collection. “The Queen is one of the most quirky people in the world,” Michele told The New Yorker at the time. “She is very inspiring.”

Excuses Not to Visit Paris

Paris may be the capital of fashion. It may also have a lot of world famous museums. Yet, never before has Paris had its own permanent, independent fashion museum. That’s about to change thanks to Chanel. The famed fashion house is donating about $6 million to help construct new facilities that will turn the existing Palais Galliera (which hosts only two shows a year and is only open for select stretches) into a full-scale permanent institution. The new 7,211-square-foot. space will host a permanent exhibition dedicated to fashion dating back to the 1800s. The news is part of a series of announcements to reinvigorate tourism to the city after the overall number of visitors took a tumble in 2016. Who doesn’t want another excuse to visit Paris? Of course, don’t feel like you have to wait until the new construction is completed to travel. The Palais Galliera’s temporary Cristóbal Balenciaga, a point of reference during Demna Gvasalia’s Fall 2017 collection for the legendary French house, is set to open this week and run through July.

Comme Des Garcons
@CommeDesGarcons

Always an avant-garde fashion provocateur, Rei Kawakubo latest collection at Comme des Garçons was really something. She dubbed the show “The Future of Silhouette,” and presented a lot of very, very interesting shapes. This pair of sexy snow women are actually some of the tamest of the bunch.
