The ‘80s

The way trend forecasters told it, now is supposed to be the time of the great ‘80s style revival. While that’s true to a degree, it seems that the actual decade people are obsessed with right this very second is one that ended only seven years ago, the 2000s. Shiny, flouncy tops straight out of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s The Simple Life-era going out wardrobe are suddenly all the rage among the Jenners and Hadids of the world. Juicy Couture-recalling sweatsuits are having a moment. After sitting a few years out, logo tees  are now decidedly back (of course, it helps if you still have your old ones as well). Hmm, maybe Philipp Plein was actually on to something when he dug up ‘00s mall rock icon Pete Wentz and put him on his runway. Of course, it’s not just fashion that’s affected by ‘00s nostalgia. People seem to be so hard up for the decade that George W. Bush is actually having a moment.

Terrence Malick

It was only fitting that Terrence Malick’s latest film Song to Song, set as it is in Austin’s indie music scene, premiered this past weekend at the city’s South by Southwest festival. Thanks to a never-ending series of delays and an all-star cast (including Michael Bassfender, Ryan Gosling, Ronney Mara, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman...not to mention a copious amount of musician cameos) the film was hotly anticipated, but flopped with critics and audiences alike when it finally bowed. In fact, it’s warranted some of the worst reviews of the director’s career. Pitchfork dubbed it “a wasted opportunity.” As it turns out, the real hit film of SXSW was Baby Driver, which stars Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver named Baby who tries to get out of the criminal life. The film has so far racked up perfect 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but unfortunately wider audiences will have to wait until August to find out what all the hype is about.

Segmented Subcultures

We are living in a post- Supreme X Louis Vuitton world, a world where the most unlikely of fashion collaborations can happen. Once a rarified French leather goods house teams up with a skate culture cult brand, there’s really nothing that seems out of the order. Further proving the point is Supreme’s next collaboration, this time with Lacoste, the French brand which has its roots deeply in the world of tennis. It’s a bit more subdued than the LV collab, but if you’ve ever wanted to tell the world that you’re the kind of person who skates to the country club for doubles, then here are the clothes you’ve been waiting for. In other news, the man behind another New York-based cult streetwear brand, Hood By Air’s Shayne Oliver, is teaming up with famed minimalist brand Helmut Lang for a capsule collection to drop next Fall

Between Big Little Lies, her upcoming broad comedy Rough Night, and indie flick Gemini, which just premiered at SXSW, Zoë Kravitz is having quite a moment, but she still finds time to snuggle with her boo, fellow actor Karl Glusman.
