Laura Dern in a JT Leroy Movie, Maybe

Helena Bonham Carter

Word first broke last year that director Justin Kelly (most recently of gay porn crime drama King Cobra) would direct a movie about the greatest literary hoax of our time. No, not James Frey. The other one. The debacle in which the literary, art and fashion worlds fell in love with an author named JT Leroy, presented as a young transgender novelist wunderkind, only to find out that Leroy never existed. Indeed, her books were written by a middle-aged woman named Laura Albert, and the author was played in public by Albert’s sister-in-law Savannah Knoop. There’s been little news on the project until now. Kristen Stewart is definitely in to play Knoop (which might explain her recent blonde buzz cut), while Laura Dern is now in talks to play Albert, according to The Hollywood Reporter (at the time of announcement Helena Bonham Carter was linked to the role). Considering that we can’t get enough of Dern’s Renata on Big Little Lies, we’re eagerly awaiting the start of this project.

Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman

Speaking of Big Little Lies, there’s some scurrilous gossip afoot that co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are on the outs. The whispers go that Witherspoon is upset that Kidman didn’t do enough to promote the series. Reps deny the claims, and also point out that Kidman and Witherspoon are also co-executive producers (meaning they both have financial stakes in the show’s success). Whatever the case, Witherspoon seems to be taken with another co-star from a different upcoming project: Oprah Winfrey. The pair recently completed filming on the upcoming A Wrinkle in Time film, and while stopping by Conan on Tuesday night Witherspoon couldn’t stop raving about her co-star. She gushes about hanging on Winfrey’s every word while she dropped her book suggestions and life advice in the makeup trailer, and suggested the talk show host had muffins flown in from Napa for the entire crew. Incidentally, there’s a chance that Oprah could end up in the running for an Emmy against both Witherspoon and Kidman for her upcoming HBO flick The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Wouldn’t that be something?

A Landmark Supreme Court Decision for Fashion

Knockoffs

One does not expect a group of people who show up to work each day in billowing black robes to have much say on fashion, but the Supreme Court on Wednesday weighed in on pressing matter in fashion (actually their first decision directly considering fashion in history). Though the case at hand dealt with cheerleading uniforms, the court rules that certain decorative elements of clothing can be protected by copyright law. That means fashion labels now have a bit more leeway to go after unscrupulous knockoff artists in America (designers tend to have better protections in place in Europe), though, clothing design in and of itself remains unprotected. So, while labels can’t sue a mall store for copying the pattern and cut of a dress, they can go after them for ripping off applied decorative elements.
