With a strong grip on scripted series, the service has made big plays lately for high-profile standup specials, new reality televisions shows, and lots of movies. They dominated acquisitions at the Sundance Film Festival this year and also bought rights to Martin Scorsese’s latest film. Now they’ve gone ahead and bought the latest film from legendary director Orson Welles. Yes, Welles has been dead for 32 years now, but somehow Netflix has done it. Between 1970 and ‘76, Welles tinkered with The Other Side of the Wind to be his return to directing and an even greater accomplishment than his masterpiece Citizen Kane. Production and financial problems led to the film being left unfinished at Welles’ death, and attempts to complete it have been mired in controversy. According to The New York Times, Netflix will partner with director Peter Bogdanovich (who, incidentally, is a major Welles expert and also acts in the film) to complete it. Bogdanovich and his team will work from 1,083 reels of footage and Welles’ handwriting notes to assemble the long awaited final cut. | | | | Multi-Hyphenate Feminists | The saying goes that women have to work twice as hard to get half as far as men. Maybe that’s why so many celebrity feminists and female activists are eager to take on multiple roles. Actress Kristen Stewart is taking up her interest in directing by helming a secret project that involves one of her favorite bands, the Scotish synthpop group Chvrches. The actress told The L.A. Times that the mysterious gig will support Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie, who already has actress, director, producers, United Nations special envoy on her resumé, has added the title of professor. In preparation for teaching a masterclass at the London School of Economics, Jolie stopped by the school's Centre for Women, Peace and Security to deliver a lecture on women’s rights. Jolie’s full course will be taught in the Fall. | | | | More and more men are showing an interest in makeup, but attempts to market makeup specifically to men has, well, not been too successful. Most guys who like makeup just use stuff intended for girls anyway. As it turns out, CoverGirl can cover boys. This has all led to the latest fad in makeup marketing: genderless beauty. Household name brands have notably already partnered with some social media-savvy male ambassadors, and according to Glossy, more brands are using men in marketing material and tutorials. This probably doesn’t amount to a full-scale targeting of new male customers i.e. your dad isn’t probably going to start using mascara anytime soon. Rather, it seems to be an acknowledgement and embrace of the male customer the industry already has. | | | | | | | | | | | Fashion photographer Steven Klein has what we’re just going to assume is the world’s poshest Purim party every year, and close friend Madonna is always on the guest list. The Jewish festival is traditionally celebrated in costume, and Madonna decided to go as both Beauty and the Beast. | | | | | | | | Will.i.am, 42 (yes.he.was) Eva Longoria, 42 (Our Favorite Housewife) Kellan Lutz, 32 (Frequently Shirtless Entertainer) Fabio, 58 (Frequently Shirtless Entertainer) | | | | | | | |
