Hollywood hasn’t seen a comedy star break through like Tiffany Haddish since, well, Melissa McCarthy. Haddish’s success in Girls Trip certainly echoed McCarthy’s in Bridesmaids, and it seemed like it was only a matter of time until Hollywood brought them together. So maybe it’s not a surprise that they’re all but officially signed on to share top billing in a film. Here’s the catch: It’s not a comedy. No, it’s a mob drama called The Kitchen. Set in 1970s New York City and based on a comic book, the film is about a group of mafia wives whose husbands get sent to jail so the ladies step up to run their crime rings. Straight Outta Compton writer Andrea Berloff penned the script and will be making her directorial debut, further hitting home the fact that this will be a straight-up drama. Incidentally, the film will be co-produced by DC Films, and while this isn’t a superhero flick, it seems like the company is applying at least one lesson it learned from its success with Wonder Woman: Pairing a female director with female stars in traditionally male-dominated dramas can certainly prove to be a success. Let’s just hope they eventually include the blooper reel on the DVD or that the pair gets the chance to co-host Saturday Night Live to promote it.

Haters Who Hate

Taylor Swift must have one of the busiest legal teams in the industry, if not one of the most accomplished, as well. Although the singer decidedly gets wound up in all sorts of odd legal situations, she usually comes out the victor. In her latest cast, Swift was sued by the writer of 3LW’s song “Playas Gon’ Play” because she included the lyrics “playas gonna play” and “haters gonna hate” in her song “Shake It Off.” Well, Swift’s team motioned to have the cast dismissed, and yesterday a judge agreed. “By 2001, American popular culture was heavily steeped in the concepts of players, haters, and player haters,” Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald wrote in his decision. “The concept of actors acting in accordance with their essential nature is not at all creative; it is banal... In short, combining two truisms about playas and haters, both well-worn notions as of 2001, is simply not enough.”

Rita Ora’s Fifty Shades

Do you remember when it was announced that Ryan Reynolds would be playing a talking Pokémon who solves crimes in a live-action movie called Detective Pikachu? No, you didn’t dream it. That was a thing that was actually announced and is being produced, and it turns out actors are lining up left and right to be a part of the film. Tony nominee Ken Watanabe and the legendary Bill Nighy have signed on, as have young Hollywood It girls like Suki Waterhouse and Kathryn Newton (who you certainly remember from attempting to sell her virginity on Big Little Lies). Now Rita Ora, having just fulfilled her commitment as a supporting player in the Fifty Shades franchise, has signed on to join the cast. At this point, we’re just going to assume that we’ll eventually wake up and read in Variety that they’ve cast Dame Judi Dench, both Willow and Jaden Smith, and Billy Eichner as well. Everyone else seems to already be in the movie.
