Fifty Shades Goes Out With a Bang

Say what you will about the Fifty Shades series (critics certainly have), but the global opening weekend take of the third and final film, Fifty Shades Freed, pushed the franchise’s total haul over the $1 billion mark. Sure, there may be dissertations’ worth of arguments about whether the films are truly feminist, but it is a property created by a woman, with a first installment directed by a woman, and catering to female audiences and their desires, and that’s nothing to brush off. Stateside, the film’s $38 million opening easily placed it at number one, and it’s expected to get a further boost on Wednesday from Valentine’s date-night audiences. Peter Rabbit, featuring James Corden voicing a far wascally-er take on Beatrix Potter’s classic wabbit, pulled in a decent $25 million for second place. Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris pulled into third place with an estimated haul of $12.6 million. That’s far lower than the wide-release opening weekend of Eastwood’s other recent tales of real life American heroism like American Sniper and Sully, but it was also a far riskier proposition with the real-life heroes actually playing themselves on-screen instead of having bonafide movie stars like Mark Wahlberg and Tom Hanks on the marquee. Now, of course, we just patiently wait for Black Panther’s total domination of the box office next weekend (well, that, and seeing how Dakota Johnson’s post-Shades career plays out).

We are smack dab in the middle of New York Fashion Week, and while some complain that the week has lost a little bit of its luster, there’s still so damn much going on. Here’s a brief recap of some of the goings on: Alexander Wang’s final NYFW show proper gave us Matrix meets the boardroom (Carrie-Anne Boss?) while also championing the return of the banana clip as a fashionable hair accessory. Philipp Plein always causes a storm during NYFW with his extravagant shows and questionable sportswear, but this time he staged an indoor blizzard in Brooklyn that also, for some reason, featured an actual robot walking the runway alongside Irina Shayk. Cardi B is this season’s omnipresent front-row celeb, and the 10th anniversary of Christian Siriano's label was the only place in the world you could see her seated next to Molly Shannon and Meg Ryan. The long-simmering feud between former Sex and the City castmates Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall took a very uncomfortable but very public turn this weekend. Hopes of a SatC 3 were dashed last year when it was revealed that Cattrall had no interest in returning, something Parker has publically lamented. In the midst of that drama being renewed this week, tragedy struck when Cattrall’s brother Christopher went missing and was later confirmed to have died. SJP reportedly reached out privately to Cattrall and publicly via social media, and Cattrall also had publicly thanked her “#SexandtheCity colleagues” for their support on Instagram. Then, on Saturday, Cattrall posted another Instagram update stating, “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.” “Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now,” she wrote in the comment. “Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.” Meanwhile, eagle-eyed fans spotted that Cattrall had left a very different comment on Instagram for Cynthia Nixon, writing “Cynthia, hearing your voice meant so much to me. Thank you for reaching out. Love Kim #SexandtheCity.”

Of course, if the last name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe referring to him as Cordell Dogg might? Yes, Snoop Dogg’s son (pictured here with Christian Combs, son of Sean “Diddy” Combs) has been seen both on the runway and in the front row all week.
